Livelife5002 | I think my mom is taking my tax money!!? |
I always just let my mom do my taxes for me. Last year I made about 7000 and she told me I only got 12 dollars on one check and 7 on the other back!! Is that possible?? I talked to other people and they said they at least got back 300 dollars and that I am being ripped off by my mom. My mom is kind of like that type of person but I just want to know if its possible. I am 17 btw. |

It's possible to get nothing back, and even to owe something extra. Through the year you might have money withheld from your paycheck for federal income tax. At the end of the year, you prepare a form called a tax return to calculate how much tax you owe total for the year, and compare that to what was withheld. If you had more withheld than your total tax, you get the extra back as a refund. If you didn't have enough withheld, you have to pay the rest rather than getting a refund.
How much was withheld from your paychecks? That's the most you can get back, and if you make enough to owe any tax, then you won't get it all back.
If you are her dependent and made $7000, you would owe around $166, so they would have kept that much of what you had withheld for federal income tax, and you'd get the rest back. You don't get back what's taken out for social security and medicare.
And by the way, even if your mom prepares your tax return for you, you are supposed to sign it. |

Why aren't you looking over your refund??? You're not going to have your mommy there to do it for you forever... Besides that, how is she cashing your checks without your signature??? |

My kid made 14k last year and only got back 156 and 66 so I think your friends are full of crap. I filed for her by the way so same type of situation. |

Ask to see the tax forms. Legally, you have to keep them anyway. Then you'll know for sure, because the amount will be on them.
And this year, do them yourself. |

amount of refund depends largely upon taxes paid. How much was witheld for federal income tax? How much was witheld for state income tax (assuming your state has an income tax?)
The people that got 300 back probably had more held out. |

Ask her if you can see the forms. But - the other people you talked to may have different situations than you do.
This year, do them yourself... with that sort of income, they are very easy. Or, ask her if you can sit with her while she does them so you will know how it works.
Also - the IRS will only make a check or payment out to the person who gets the refund - so how do you think she's taking the money from you?? |

are you a dependent? if you mother is claiming you as a dependent, then most of your tax refund money will go to her, legally. |

Withholding is based on how much wages earned in pay period. Ask your mom to show you your w-2's. Look to see what was with held. It is hard to compare refunds as they are based on each persons wages, deductions and filing status. At 17 it is a good time to start learning how to do it yourself. $19 is not enough to get angry at a parent who has been there for your first 17 years! :) |

Seventeen bucks? lol... I think you got jipped. For the most part you usually get about a fourth of your witholdings back, but I wouldnt call your mom a liar. Maybe there is a reason your getting so little. |
