Well let me tell you a little secert?

Since you got this with reading my answer you can do your own taxes!!!!! just go to http://www.irs.gov and read the 1040 form and the 1040 instructions. Any other forms you need come with instructions. Taxes aren't that hard to prepare just sometimes read a bit confusing.

You go to the IRS instruction books that accompany the tax return forms. You can also use the IRS website. Or you can buy tax preparation software.

Turbo Tax just walks you through each step. It's so much cheaper than accountants. The worst thing that can happen is that you make a mistake and the IRS sends you the correction and tells you what to do. Take the leap and you'll be much happier.

You can go to the irs.gov and download the information needed for each form plus they have publications that will explain details. You can also buy some software and they have tutorials included. I have tried Turbo Tax and had no problems but then I do bookkeeping and Tax Cut and when the software didn't work, got no technical help and had to buy a different program. The tutorials will ask you questions, you answer them yes or no and they take you through the different forms and then if yes ask for the pertinant information. Then you can usually electronically file from the program so that you get any refund quickly. They also check your taxes over and make suggestions for other deductions and check it for mistakes. Don't for get to sign it & attach whatever they ask for and save a copy for yourself and all backups of proof.
Good luck. I also suggest that you compare the taxes you do with the taxes done by others in past years for comparision sake so that you miss nothing. The first year takes more time but if you have the same forms to do each year, it gets easier and easier and the front of the guide for the 1040 has the changes for each year so you stay current.

you can do them online using TurboTax, or buy the Turbotax Deluxe which will include your state (that's always separate), then you'll have the software and all the instructions. I used TurboTax for 12 years. I no longer have to file taxes (my income is totally Social Security, which isn't taxable.)

You can buy TurboTax at Staples, Office Depot, Wal-Mart and Target.

You can go to your local library and get the forms and fill them out. But be ready for a headache. I'de reccomend you get some tax software, that's what I do every year, I use H&R Block's Taxcut software, and it is real easy. I'de say it's worth the 30 bucks or whatever they charge.

go to irs.gov or maybe try turbo tax

my brain hurts
What you need is a form 1040. If you're just reporting your taxes and not claiming any interest paid, medical expenses, etc., you can even just do a 1040-EZ, which is, as the name suggests, super easy. There is also a booklet available that explains step by step how to fill out the forms. You can order or download both at http://www.irs.gov/ or you should also be able to find them at your local library and/or post office.
A 1099 on the other hand is something that is sent to you from anyone that you pay interest to, like a mortgage company or school loan. If you are claiming interest on a mortgage, medical expenses, or property tax, you will also need to get yourself a "Schedule A" form.
It's fairly easy to do your own taxes, as long as you understand math and have a lot of patience. Though I would highly recommend enlisting the help of a friend or family member the first time you do it.
