I was asked this and had no answer. How much money can you depoist and not have it reported to the IRS?

Additional Details
That was deposit, sorry about the typo! LOL

under 10K.

In an episode of The Sopranos, it was anything under $10,000 did not have to be reported.

Why does everyone think the IRS gets reports on large deposits? They DON'T. Banks have to report deposits of $5,000 or above (and they also report deposits NEAR $5,000, like $4,999.99 to catch those sneaky sneaks) to the TREASURY DEPARTMENT, not to the IRS. The treasury department has their own reasons for requiring this, none of which have to do with taxes (mainly money laundering and now "homeland security").

So fear not if you've legally got more then $5,000 sitting around and you want to deposit it, the IRS wont have any knowledge of it whatsoever. Now, any interest you earn will be reported to them, but I'm sure you already knew that.

I'm sorry, I didn't see your earlier question. As others have said, and I believe they are correct. $10,000.00, though I am not entirely certain.

$9999

IRS only worries about income ie the interest earned on the money.
