Why does everyone think the IRS gets reports on large deposits? They DON'T. Banks have to report deposits of $5,000 or above (and they also report deposits NEAR $5,000, like $4,999.99 to catch those sneaky sneaks) to the TREASURY DEPARTMENT, not to the IRS. The treasury department has their own reasons for requiring this, none of which have to do with taxes (mainly money laundering and now "homeland security").
So fear not if you've legally got more then $5,000 sitting around and you want to deposit it, the IRS wont have any knowledge of it whatsoever. Now, any interest you earn will be reported to them, but I'm sure you already knew that. |
