this is the second time that Inland revenue make a mistake overpaying tax credit about £4000, I was planning to go and live abroad with my family, I called them at the end of every year to give them the right information of my annual salary. I dont know what to do, what would happen if I go as it was not my fault . Any advice please

Go to your local Social Service or Citzen's advice bereau - ask to see a Welfare Rights officer who will assist you with an appeal against this. There are rules about appealing and the WRO will help you look at the reason for over payment (it's the actual underlying calculation you appeal), there are time limits so you must do this with 28 days of being notified. Do not do this alone.

There are also strict guidlines on offical errors that the WRO should know and can remind HMRC of.

this has happened to me. they 'claimed' back the overpayment by reducing my tax credits over a number of months.

they told me it was my responsibility to check the paperwork they sent me - i did not really understand what was sent and assumed they were competent.

if you have your paperwork, you had best go through and check it - if the information appears as you gave it, you can appeal.

i have to say, i appealed, but was turned down and there was no other avenue available to me.

i would strongly recommend you visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and talk with them.

Best of luck

good luck, we are in a dispute with them over an alleged overpayment, four years later and still trying to sort it out!
the tax credits is the biggest shambles in the UK!

you should try and call them - since they will ask you to pay it back

You have given them the correct information. Back that up with a registered or recorded delivery letter repeating the information. Keep copies of everything you send them. If they don't do anything what more can you be reasonably expected to do?

Carry on with your life as planned.Just make sure you keep the relevant paperwork in case they dispute your version or they "have no record" of your information in future.

If all the info you gave them was correct then you can appeal it, ask at your local CAB. They are not allowed to reclaim overpayments if it was their error. I have done this and was successful.

Just fill out all the forms and hope for the best, it seem £4,000 is a convenient figure as that's what we were over payed. You can fight your case but i think it will fall on deaf ears unless you seek professional help from a solicitor which may or may not cost you more than they are asking for back.

Amy H
Just phone them up and they will help you.
