I was recently paid some money for the sale of shares, now I am told I was paid in error do I have to repay?
I was entitled the shares with a previous employer, but learned that I would forfeit the shares if employed for less than 3 years. I left after 2.5 years. I was paid for the shares in a buy out and was then told that an administrative error had been made and I had to repay the full amount (£209). Do I have to repay the monies, as this was not my error, and if so do I have to repay in full in one go. I am a single parent, working but claiming Working and Child Tax Credits. I do not have the funds available to pay this amount back. I was told in the letter than I have 14days in which to repay the monies.

You must pay it back. You knew you were not entitled to this money as you had left your employment.
Ask for longer than 14 days to pay. That's the only hope you have.

assuming you have spent it, offer to pay over a few months or weeks.

at the end of the day yes it is their error and obviously you were not aware at the time that it was an error, it will have to be repaid as the money does not belong to you.

they will be sympathetic, its only £209 so make them an offer and im sure they will accept.

Turn the situation around.
You pay someone money they are not entitled to.
What would you do?
It`s your money, not theirs, and they have no legal right to keep it.
Same applies to you.
Pay it back and have a clear conscience.

Im affraid you do have to pay it back but the 14 days is just a guidline and is put in letters to make sure that you reply to them but if you phone or write(do keep a copy for yourself) telling them your situation they will come to a comprimise and tell you to pay back an affordable amount each week/month but dont leave it too long as they get impatient and sell your debt to debt collectors/bailiffs then the amount goes up and noone needs that hassel.Make sure the amount you aggree to is what you can afford. Good luck

if you dont pay they could take you court for the money. either way you wlll have to
pay make an appointment to see the previous employer and explain the situation. good luck.

jackie m
check with citizen advice but I would think you would have to pay it back because it was pointed out in advance that if you left within 3 years you do not qualify.

If you do feel that the letter says the truth about repayment and if you from your deepest heart you feel that the story is true, then it is better not to lie and let yourself down by ignoring reality. It is better to repay what is not for you.
If you do have problem paying them back, I do prefer you go back to the employer and explain to him your true current situation and sure he will understand and will be ready to resolve the issue on phases.
good luck

Unfortunately, yes. If you had had the money in your bank for 6 months or more, they would have had problems getting it back off you.

Sorry
