Siannn | I was taxed at 16, how do I get the money back? |
When working as a waitress, I was taxed, although I shouldn't of been because I was still in full time employment. When i realised i was being taxed, the boss told me I would be able to claim back the money. I was taxed £56.32 before my boss changed it. I left the resturant in March 2008. I have recieved my P45 & it states how much I have been taxed. Is there any way of getting this money back? I don't really understand Tax returns & what not...? Additional Details Yeah I mean't to put full time education & not employment. I was only part time :) |

I presume that although you say you were in full time employment, you mean that you were still in full time education?
In this case, yes you will have overpaid, and you can claim it back.
Simply phone the tax office and explain the situation to them. Make sure you use a land line if possible, not your mobile, as its 0845, and you could be waiting a little while for your call to be answered.
You will need to confirm your national insurance number, and your personal security details (address, date of birth, full name, and possibly may ask where you worked) so that they can enter your record. Then you can give them the PAYE reference on the P45, (usually three numbers followed by a mixture of letters and numbers)and explain that you had no other earnings in the year, and you were still at school/college, and think you should be entitled to a refund.
Make sure that they have the same details of earnings and tax deducted that you have on the P45.
They should then be able to refund you the money, and will either send you a cheque or pay it straight into your bank account.
If you are not comfortable in talking to them, and would prefer someone else to do the talking for you, thats fine, just confirm your details, and ask if they mind talking to whoever is going to explain it for you. They will be happy to do this as you have given them permission to talk to someone else on your behalf.
Hope this helps. |

Not sure I agree with any of these answers.
You simply need to write to your tax office and give them full details of all your earnings from 6/4/07 to 5/4/08 and ask them to check for a refund. |

Oh dear! Suerye, no wonder the Revenue gets such confusing correspondence!
Suerye is right. You don't need to do a Tax Return, or wait until the end of this tax year. Was the comment you were in full-time employment a mistype? If you were in full-time education you would be due a refund, but if it was full-time employment, you would have had your tax allowance there.
Complete form P91 for the period 06/04/07 to 05/04/08, including periods you were not earning, send to tax office with all forms P45/60 you hold for that year, and ask for refund. Download form P91 from www.hmrc.gov.uk/p91.
Incidently not many towns in the UK now have tax offices. Those that have will soon lose them the way things are going with closures made by the Government. |

Sounds like you have been taxed the emergency tax (I bet your payslips had BR for tax code). Don't panic. Find your local tax office http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/enq/main.htm and give them a ring. Explain that you think you were overtaxed and have a P45 to prove it. They will be able to help you. You can then either physically go to the tax office or write them a letter enclosing a copy of P45.
But if you don't mind waiting most likely you will be reimbursed automatically in the beginning of the next tax year i.e. April 2009. If you are still in employment in April, you will notice from your payslips you will be charged less or no tax until all the money owed to you are returned. But I would not wait and do it myself just for the peace of mind.
Hope it helps. |

You file the return, you've to file how much you earn to the goverment and how much taxes you paid and you'll get a refund. No idea which forms its called there here in Canada they get you fill a form called t4, but I'll advise you to learn everything needed to fill these things cause you'll be filling them for the rest of your life until you retire so you might as well learn early... I did the mistake of ignoring these forms and they come back and haunt you.. |
