I was told that I can't claim my girlfriend who lives with me on my taxes is this true ? I live in Michigan.

Common reasons you can't:

1. she didn't live with you all year.
2. you didn't provide more than half of her support.
3. she made more than $3400.
4. she's living with you while she's in school and her parents claim her.
5. you violate local law....

NOTE TO ALL, Many boyfriends legally do claim their girlfriends. They just have to meet ALL of the tests.

Just to add to what "v b" said.

Michigan is one of the states where it is technically illegal to cohabitate (in other words....live together without being married).

While the cohabitation is not usually enforced, it does invalidate any exemption claim on the federal or state return.

You can if she's a dependant. No job, you pay everything and her return states that she is dependant.

SG
Listen to v b. As usual, he is correct.

im pretty sure this is true, unless you have custody of her (and she's under 23), she is disabled, or too old to work... you cannot claim her.

of course not. You are not maried nor is she a relative.

If you want the advantages of being married, you have to be married.

Katie W
That is correct. She cannot be a dependent since she is not related to you, by blood, adoption, or marriage. You can choose to have whomever you want to live with you, but until you are legally responsible for them, you can't claim them on your taxes.

Jenny M
You're not married....She is just your girlfriend. Why would you be able to claim her?
