Independent Contractor is a wildly tossed around expression these days! Do you literarally sign contracts with your employers? If so, and you make over $600 from an individual employer they are required to 1099 you. If you make less it is optional and usually not cost effective for them to do so. It is all about the 1099. That is the paper trail. I have seen dozens of independant contractors being followed from job to job by the IRS via their 1099's. Of course ..... all cash payments made to you are your obligations to report. But get real ... where is the paper trail? Of course I pay taxes on all my cash payments ........................................... I accept emails if you would like to discuss this more confidentially and non-judgementally. |

The IRS will find you and hound you until the day you die... and the INTEREST will double about every month so you will end up paying 500 TIMES more in the end than if you just pay the taxes and be done with it. |

Bad things, eventually.
Besides, you want to pay your taxes. Then you want to write off every expense you can think of so that you get the bulk of those taxes back legally. Might want to set yourself up as a sole proprietorship to facilitate that. |

They'll catch up with you...and you be in trouble |

One day you will have to pay the tax man. Do not get on his radar, just claim as many expenses as you can (legally), and pay your taxes.
Then you will sleep at night.
If you in arrears or behind, make an effort to catch up.
Since you work for yourself, you have the ability to increase your income. Make a budget, stick to it, and pay your tax.
Live below your means - invest the surplus. |

Why wouldn't you pay taxes. Everyone has to pay tax. What makes you exempt????
You will be screwed, that's what will happen. You don't think The IRS , a HUGE government agency is going to find out about this??? You will be required to pay all of the tax you owe, plus fines and penalties. If you file false income tax returns, maybe jail as well.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, they will catch up with you just as you are thinking how smart you were in not paying taxes 5 or 6 years down the road, just when you are laughing it up envisioning how smart and crafty you were. I hope you're not putting any of this money in a bank..you don't think the fact that you have a bank account is going to be a major red flag, like where did you get the bank account money!!!! |

You are the third person in the past five minutes to post essentially the same question. Unless you are a newpaper carrier on a bike route, it is unlikely that you are a real independent contractor.
I have a canned explanation to apparently clueless independent contractors:
Some employers try to get around paying employment taxes (social security and unemployment) and other employee benefits like workers compensation insurance by improperly classifying employees as independent contractors. The basic issue is the amount of control the employer has over the worker. If you are required to show up for work--personally--at a particular time, punch the clock, use the employers equipment and are paid an hourly rate, you are an employee. If you didn't understand the difference when you posed your question, I would be even more convinced that you are an employee. What is your preference, Slotted or Phillips? Complete an IRS Form SS-8 to get an official ruling on your status. This will help you get unemployment if you get fired. When you file your income tax return, you can attach Form 8919 Uncollected Social Security and Medicare Tax on Wages and only pay the employer's half of social security. You will still have to cough up all the income tax. IRS and the states are stepping up enforcement in the abuse area.
If you don't file a return, IRS will do it for you and tack on a potfull of penalty and interest. |

IRS will assess severe penalties. You should pay your taxes on time, or get an extension. Talk to your tax consultant and he can advise you how to do it. You can wait to last minute and then get an extension. That's better than not filing and getting caught. The penalties will add up quick and cost you a fortune, and you will have to pay or go to jail. Good Luck. |
