grandma | I work in a hotel, I am able to buy meals at half price, but I'm charged tax on the full amount of the meal. ? |

That is the law. Thank the politicians for that. Airline employees fly discounted rate but pay sales tax on full price. Also have to claim the full price value as income. Taxes get us coming and going. |

In theory, you are always required to pay tax on the full amount. Even if there is a discount.
In reality, most of the time, the discount is taken before sales tax is calculated, so tax is not charged.
BUT, the correct way is to add tax and then apply the discount. |

Yes, they are required by the state to calculate sales tax on the pre-discount price. |

The IRS gets their taxes on the full value. If you use a coupon in the store they ring up your purchases, add the taxes, and then subtract the coupon so you are paying taxes on the full amount. It is not the IRS's decision to discount your meals. |

It is legal, as they tax the full amount of the product.
It like when you win a free Coke, but they tax you on the value
(regular sales price). |
|

Probably because of a state law requiring tax on the posted price. In my state, California, tax is charged on the price charged but in our Neighbor, Nevada, you pay on the menu price. |
