I work in one state and live in another state and pay state tax in both states is there someway around this?

mliu_work
Hard to answer not knowing which states you live/work in. Some states allow for a credit for income taxes paid to other states.
As an example, someone living in NJ but working in New York City will have NY state taxes withheld from their paycheck. At the end of the year, they file NY non-resident tax forms and NJ resident tax forms. On the NJ forms, they calculate their tax liability, and there is a place to enter the amount of tax paid to other states (NY in this case). A credit is applied based on the ratio of income taxable in both states over income taxable only by NJ. In most cases, the net amount of the liability and the credit is close to zero.

States, especially adjacent ones, normally have reciprocal agreements where you can deduct the taxes paid to one state from what you'd owe in the other.

crystal
yeah move to the state u work in

STEVEN F
If both state have income taxes, you are required to FILE in both states. In most cases the tax you actually pay is the higher of the to rates. How that is divided between the states depends on the states involved.

Nope I don't thimk so. My mother did the same thing many years ago. Your only way around it would be to live and work in the same state.

Not sure I get your question. You live in a state and pay normal taxes each year and if you work in another state you have to file a non resident fpr, for a refund but certainly not pay anything if you don't reside there.
(Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming don't have any personal income taxes).

Not unless one of the states has no income taxes. There are a few like FL and TX. Or just move to state where you work.

Tony S
Get another job, preferably one without a state income tax.
