You'll get 34.51 back if you file, and should also be eligible for an earned income credit of $179 if your son is an eligible child for EIC, EIC of $40 if he isn't. You don't get larger sums like you list unless you work a lot more than you did.

acmeraven
On $ 541 you are entitled to 179 in EIC for one child; plus the 34.51 you had withheld in FIT.

By any chance where you living with anyone in 2007? If so, were they supporting you? They may be able to claim you and your son as qualifying relatives, but not if you file and claim EIC. (You can still file and claim the $34.51.)

If you want it back, yes.

If that is all that you made, you could get it all back. Might as well file, it can hurt. Likely you can file on the EZ form.

Yes, you will get it back.

I'm pretty sure you'll get most, if not all, of what you paid into taxes, since you only made 541.89 (assuming that's for the whole year).

But I think you need to file it to get it back.

Yes, you have to file a tax return. Go to www.turbotax.com and select the 1040EZ form, it is free. Since you made so little money, you will not pay any taxes. You will get back all the taxes you paid.

If at least $400 of this was from self-employment, you have to file and you owe self-employment tax, so you get back nothing and pay something.

If less than $400 (or none) was from self-employment, you are not required to file.

If less than $400 (or none) was from self-employment and you do file, you get $34.51 plus the earned income credit.

I think you do not have to file taxes if you made less than $600.00 in one year.

golden rider
If you only made $541.89, you won't get any of it back sweety. I think there is a minimum as to how much you have to make before you even file. Why don't you just call like H+R Block and ask someone that knows. Not to say that someone on here might know, but you would get a more direct answer from H+R Block.
