americangal1981 | I worked in NY till 08/22 now Im working in NC..how do I do taxes? |
I know tax season is still a few months away but Im curious. Ive lived in NY all my life but recently married someone who is active duty. We just moved to NC on 09/01 and I started working here. Needless to say, I will have 2 different W-2s with 2 different state taxes. How do I go about doing this? |

For the state returns you will need to file a Part-Year Resident Return for both states.
You will calculate what was earned in each state. This is easy for the W2's, but might be a bit harder for savings accounts and such. You will also have to calculate the amount of deductions that apply to each state. This is easy if you follow the forms line by line. You will not be double taxed.
If you are uneasy about doing this yourself, you can always have someone do it for you. You can prepare your own federal return, and just have someone do the state returns. Many military bases have free help available for filing your tax returns.
Don't forget to take your moving expenses (if you paid them). Generally, these are only allowable for moving into a state.
Hope this helps. |

You will file one federal return and 2 part-year resident returns, one for each state.
Turbo Tax or some other tax software can easily handle this, although ther might be an additional cost in downloading the software for the 2nd state. |

You will end up filing two state returns, one for NC and one for NY.
See an accountant if you cannot figure it out yourself, they deal with this all the time.
If you don't file in both states, you will not get back any money that you paid into NY (if you get money back).
Taxes stink. |

For the income received while in NC, you will report on NC tax return.
You will report your worldwide income for all the year 2008 on NY tax return. On the NY tax return, claim credit for taxes paid to NC.
Read about taxes for two states: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/06/working-in-two-or-more-states.html |

You file in NC only. I did it once and I would suggest going to an accountant. They will help you out. |

it won't effect your federal filing. you will file two state tax forms ny and nc. |

well, there are lots of different tax places or such around NC and around the bases (which is where i'm guessing you are). i'd ask around the base for references or help with your tax forms.
good luck! |

You use the address where you currently reside. Some states who have income tax treat out of state residents differently than those who reside within their state. You should either contact a tax professional or the respective states to make sure of what you need to do. In any case, I don't think that you would be responsible for taxes other than for earned in those respective states. Someone who does taxes, such as H & R Block should be able to tell you what you need to do. |

Shouldn't matter. It's federal, not state. |
