starfield | I would like to claim some tax money back because I believe I am paying too much of it. How do I go about it? |
I am decent individual (living in the UK) and just like everybody, I am paying taxes. I believe I am paying too much of it and I would like to claim the money back because I am entitled to it. How do I go about asking for a refund from the HMRC?
I am entitled to claims like:
1. washing my uniform at home
2. paying subscription to my trade union
3. paying a monthly gift aid to a charitable association
thanx |

you need your p60 to claim all you need to do is send it to your local office and ask them to review your tax payment.
Also inform them about your uniform and other payments.

Have you not filled in a self-assessment form? Maybe you should go to an accountant for advice on what you can claim for. You may have to pay them but their advice could save you £'s in the long run. |

Re the gift aid - if you are a basic rate taxpayer (ie don't earn more than about £35k) you are already getting tax relief as the charity is receiving about £1.28 for every £1 you give.
If you earn more than this you can claim some extra relief but would have to fill in a tax return. |

You can write to yur local tax office and ask them to increase your tax code allowance by the amounts you want to claim for. To do this ask your payroll department for the tax office address. You then need to send proof with the letter of the costs that you incur.
I don't think you can claim for washing uniform at home. Also with the charity you may already receive tax relief through the payroll (if you participate in a give as you earn scheme) Usually I think the charity cliams the tax back instead of yourself claiming it back.
The subscription may be ok.
But good luck, they don't like to give out much!
Ps, Nurses out there, you can claim for tights etc |

Find your local tax office and take your wage slips with you, then they can check your tak code and you can ask them questions. I had to reclaim tax a couple of years ago and my tax code had changed. The office tried to change it through my employer, they phoned them up whilst I was there and everything and they still didn't do it. I ended up asking the accounts department for my employer to change my tax code and it was done staight away. Below is a government site on tax information.

You have to use your P60, this is what tells the tax people how much money you've earn't and they base your tax code on this. If you believe they've got your tax code wrong, you'll need to contact the tax office with as much info as you can from your P60. (Your tax code is what determines how much money you can earn before you start to pay tax.) |

I live in the US and when that happens you should go get an accountant and go over that last couple of tax forms. I think, but not 100% sure, that you can go back 7 years and re-claim what was missed and what can be proved. Also, if you use a computer software tax prep, I think that there is a place that you can ask and check the return.
#1, I don't know about.
#2, I'm pretty sure that some, if not, all can claimed.
#3, that can be claimed with receipts from the companies that you donated to with the dates and amounts. |
