I disagree that you should NOT get it because you owe back taxes. People forget when you got surprised with a huge tax hit, you set up a payment program and pay dearly with interest! So, in my opinion the government is getting what they deserved and much more for their wait. The taxpayer should get the rebate because it is for the stimulation to the economy that it is being sent out for! |

If you owe back taxes, any rebate will be captured to offset the balance due. If there's anything left, you'll get it. Why should some who is behind on their taxes get a REWARD for being late? They're getting a "freebie" payment and should be extremely thankful for it. |

No, it does not defeat the point. The amount of rebate that they do not send you reduces the amount of taxes you owe. Therefore, you can spend the money that you would otherwise have needed to use to pay the taxes you owe. Letting you keep or spend that money stimulates the economy as much as sending you a rebate would. |

If you are talking about the stimulus package (and not a rebate), it is important what your adjusted gross income is (AGI), not if you owe taxes or get a return.

I'm one of the "unlucky" ones who got slammed with a random audit this past fall. It was miserable! Digging through three years of papers. We ended up having to pay in, of course, IRS never makes a mistake do they! And now some of you say I shouldn't get any rebate, I guarantee if you were audited, you'd feel different about it. The only taxes we've ever owed is to the state, in which I have always paid way before April 15th. So don't be so quick to jump the gun at saying I don't deserve it because I owe. The audit was only over a couple months ago. I've only had to make one payment! So there are different circumstance for people who owe taxes. Some are deadbeats, others aren't. I think every deserves to get a rebate check, then the smart ones would put it towards their taxes! |
