IRS Lies AGAIN?
So they let the media lie to the entire nation (the public was mislead according to the IRS rep I spoke with) about their stimulus payments. I was under the estimation that if you made over 3,000 and were single you would get 600 dollars. I check my bank account and my check was only 300 dollars. Having researched this thouroughly before, there was NO calculator on the IRS's website until now (how convienent for them) and they NEVER mentioned that it may or may not be based on the tax you paid. I feel CHEATED! That 600 dollars was going to help pay utility bills that I'm behind on and buy groceries so I can eat AND pay bills this month!

It's a bunch of crap really. I read somewhere though that they were having problems with the payments, so can anybody give me some help here because the IRS sure enlightened me (not).
Additional Details
do know they were having problems with other's payments, but yeah I agree with the girl that said they used the "upto" to cover their behinds and I agree with the last poster's entire post. My budgeting skills are FINE, I just wanted to be able to HAVE that extra money to pay off a credit card. I live in southern oregon, rent is expensive here and jobs are few and far between, only part time, no benefits and lousy pay. You can only do so much with what you have, I just feel lied to because the "UP TO" part wasn't stressed enough!

Another good citizen duped by the very government that espouses that which is right and proper. Once again the Bush regime "stays the course". I'm sorry to hear your plight but did you really think these liars would actually do as promised? I truely believe there is some kind of ulterior motive behind these supposed "benefit" checks, as crooked as this government has become I would not put anything past those lying thieves.
This country deserves a real government for a change, not another bunch of liars such as we presently 'enjoy'. Oh, and if you think that any of the garbage is going to change with the new administration coming in you had better take another look, they are cut from the same bolt of cloth and will do the same things thus perpetuating the lies and deciet. One political party is no different than the other, they just use different words to say the same thing. So whether you vote demigod or republifool it makes no real difference, it is the poor and impoverished that take it in the shorts each and every time. So bend over and enjoy the ride, it's the best screw job you will ever get. I love my country, it's this "government"?? I refuse to trust or acknowledge.

you got 300 dollars for nothing and you're angry?

It is UP TO 600 for individual. If you payed less then 600 in fed taxes but more then 3 you would get that exact amount. If you paid less then 3 in fed taxes then you get the 300.
Sorry!

You received $300 for free and you are complaining.

The IRS always said UP TO $600. Your mind blanked out the UP TO part.

WOW - all I've seen lately is how greedy some people can be. You're getting FREE money and all you do is complain. If you were smart enough - you'd find the calculator on the www.irs.gov website. Perhaps that's why you got what you got. You're behind on your bills due to your own fault - not because you only received 300 instead of 600. You need to either learn to budget your funds or get a better job that pays a salary equal to your standard of living.

You were not "cheated" ... you just assumed wrong. It's a REBATE anyway. How could you be "cheated"?

Be happy with the windfall, no matter the amount. You just got a check for free and are complaining? :)

I don't know where you were getting your information, but the IRS has always said the payments would be *UP* *TO* $600 per person, not that each person was guaranteed to get the full $600. Also, the calculator has been available on the IRS Web site for *many* weeks, so I don't know what you mean when you say it hasn't been there "until now". I hardly think the IRS can be held responsible for what people believed, when they themselves gave the actual facts for those who cared to read them.

And if you were truly counting on an unanticipated gift of free money to buy your groceries, might I suggest that you *seriously* need to reevaluate your budgeting skills?

My husband and I are only getting 600 instead of 1200 and I am happy as can be that I am just getting extra money, no matter how much it is it helps right now! By the way its always been stated up to 600 or 1200 so on, never was it said that single with 3000 income would get 600 rebate. Just like it was said above how could you feel cheated over free money?

I can understand, we were planning for twice what we recieved, however when I read all the "it may be less if..." there were "reasons" we didn't get the amount we were looking for. It is discouraging, we were going to pay off a couple of credit cards with it. There was a catch phrase in the media, they did say, "up to x amount of dollars" so the "up to" covered their butts.

The IRS lied, because the media in some of their reports didn't explain things enough for people who wanted to think they would get the maximum?

I agree that some media reports were sketchy at best. What else is new? And do you really think the government, or the IRS, writes the on-air scripts?

You got $300 free dollars, and are still griping?

The only place you got cheated was when you learned to read. Every single article mentioned the modifier "up to." It's not the IRS's fault that you didn't understand it.

And it's not the IRS's fault that the President and Congress ballyhooed the program. The IRS has posted FAQs from day one with sample calculations. They then added a calculator. Then they moved up the distribution of any payment they could.... The IRS even shifted resources to answer the phones because 50,000 more people a day were calling.

And still this wasn't enough for you.

Question? When have you ever heard the truth from any government statement? Or a politician? All statements are worded in a way that cannot be totally understood by the normal person, unless they hav a degree in stealth languages.

Do you really trust the government to not be misleading? The media helps them mislead us daily. It's been my experience that you can count on them to screw up whatever they touch. Your lesson here, never rely on the government for anything! (I knew that it was based on the taxes you paid..I'm not sure how you misunderstood that....it's a rebate not free money) Just find a way to make the 300 work for you and take an honest look at where you're spending your money. I promise you this is going to get worse before it gets better. People need to be prepared. People need to wake up and get more involved. We vote these lunatics in....
