IRS agents: Is there any law in fine print that tells me I have to pay my federal income tax?
As far I as I am understanding, there really isn't a law. Should I stop paying my federal income tax?

Actually there is a law. It is contained in the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, and it is fairly simply stated:

Section 1 of the Internal Revenue Code (Title 26 of the United States Code) says, "A tax shall be imposed on the taxable income of...." and then it lists all the types of tax filing (married, single, etc.) and the tax rates for each type of filer.

Section 63 of the Internal Revenue Code defines "taxable income" as gross income minus allowable deductions and credits.

Section 61 of the Internal Revenue Code defines "gross income" as all income "from whatever source derived, including, but not limited to..." and then it lists a number of items. The first item on the list is compensation for services. Compensation for services means wages.

That's the law that requires you to pay income tax. You can access a copy of the US Code--the compiled list of all laws passed by Congress--at the link below. If you want to access the code sections I just quoted, type "26" in the "Title" box and "1," "63," or "61" in the "Section" box.

Sigh. Same old stuff. And still the same old answer:

The U.S. Code *IS* law. The Internal Revenue Service operates under the provisions of Title 26 of the U.S. code.

Here's more information about this and many other false theories about why we "don't have to pay" income tax:

There is no point in arguing with fools. They have been spouting the same tired lines since before the internet and all bat zero when they get to court.

Have a nice day but don't be surprised when someone from IRS comes out to give you an attitude adjustment.

Maybe as far as you are concerned there isn't a law, but as far as federal courts and tax courts, up to the Supreme Court, there is.

File your return, pay your taxes, and stay out of trouble.

Why people keeping asking this stupid question. The IRS's Internal Revenue Code IS the law!!!!

As many of the others have pointed out, there is a law. I won't bother repeating it. However, if you still believe there isn't a law, may I recommend some risk assessment.

There are only FOUR outcomes if you decide to stop paying taxes.

1. You don't pay taxes and the IRS never notices. THIS IS RARE and usually only works for those who work strictly cash jobs.

2. You don't pay taxes, the IRS does notice but decides NOT to charge you with a crime. Instead, the IRS uses strictly civil actions to place liens on any property, seize your bank accounts and garnish your wages. You are assessed penalties and interest and end up owing two to three times more than the taxes.

3. You don't pay taxes, the IRS does notice and decides to file criminal charges against you. You get incredibly lucky and are acquitted. However, an acquittal does not absolve you of your income tax liability. For the result, see 2.

4. You don't pay taxes, the IRS does notice and decides to file criminal charges against you. You are convicted on some, if not all counts in the indictment. You are sentenced for anywhere from 8 months to several years in prison. YOU STILL OWE TAXES, PENALTIES and INTEREST. For the result, see 2.

Now, since there are only four results and three of them are bad, do you really think it is a good idea to not pay taxes?

Your understanding is incorrect.

http://www.quatloos.com/hereisthelaw.htm

The people that claim that there is no law are called Tax Protesters. They have been around as long as the income tax itself and, while their theories vary, they all have one thing in common. Not one of them has ever been victorious in court and gotten out of paying their taxes.

Tax Protesters tend to die broke and alone. File your returns and pay your taxes. You will be much happier in the long run.

THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL I SAW THEM ON THE INTERNET:

Nobody ever really landed on the moon - it was a giant hoax. What you saw on TV was filmed in Utah.

Elvis is still alive, and performing marriage ceremonies in Las Vegas.

It is unconstitutional for the government to tax your wages (income tax), the 16th amendment was never ratified, and most of what we think of as income isn't really income anyway.

Excuse me now....I just won 2 million pounds in the online UK lottery when my email was randomly selected, and I have to go answer the email.....

;-}

Actually , it does not really matter if you ask online here or anywhere .
Every year as many guys ask this question as girls ask about being fat or ' could I be pregnant ' .

It is when a person stops paying that the fun begins .

A co-worker who began like you ended up with a huge bill after original amount , interest , penalties etc etc etc .

Unable to comply ( they let you run until your balance would nearly bail out a bank ) they eventually came and just took $$$$$ out of his paycheck .
In his case , it was $500 Extra every 2 weeks .
He moved to a cheap room rental and ate gas station dollar burritos .
It took about 4 years before he could eat normal and move out of the room .
He was a twit tho so we all just laughed and talked about all the things we were going to do with our $$$$$$ .

Keep us posted about your adventure and how big the bill is when they start just taking 75% of your paycheck .

Or , you could live on the run , under the freeway overpasses and stuff .
Kind of a hassle tho, having no job / No income .

Kenpachi,

I guess it is not very smart to ask online. You never know who responds.

You could get someone who decides to flag your return.
