I don't know if the government is picking on you - you haven't said anything about whether or not your brother really did qualify as your dependent. They get a lot of false claims for dependents, so have been checking out a lot more of them lately.
Just a letter that you wrote isn't proof of anything, sorry. Can you come up with things like school or medical records or something official like that to show that he lived with you. The should be able to tell you what kind of records the are looking for. |

"I made up some letter and gave it to them" doesn't really cut it. What can you produce that shows your little brother lived with you? Things to looks for is does his school send mail to your address address. If he drives is his address with DMV your address? Can you show you pay his bills? Do your parents claim him too? |

Your tax preparer did a poor job of explaining your return to you.
Did your brother live with you or not? If he did, start gathering proof. The letter told you what to get. School records, medical records, copies of your lease where you have him listed as a tenant, etc.
There is so much fraud when it comes to people claiming head of household, child tax credit and EIC, that the IRS has to ask for these things. |

if things get too heated, you can contact the taxpayers advocacy number on the IRS site.
Can you produce school records or other 3rd party documentation that gives evidence of his residence with you for the year? You may be able to get a norotized statement from neighbors or parents who know the kid living with you?
Don't panic, just ask the IRS what they consider an official letter and give it to them. I assume you are getting the Earned Income Credit. This letter is very standard, they have to 'check up' on x number of people to verify the information because lots of disputes occur over the EIC. |

Were you entitled to claim your brother as a dependent? You need to clarify that with the IRS. You should go back to the accountant who prepared your return and get his/her help (you will need to pay for it).
A person can only be claimed on one tax return. So if your parents claimed your brother, you can not also claim him. If you were entitled to claim him, and they were not, then they need to amend their return and write a letter to explain what happened (and you should send a copy to the IRS).
If you were not entitled to claim your brother, then you will need to pay back the money. And do it as quickly as possible so that you minimize interest and penalties. |

So what you're saying is that you claimed a fake exemption and now the government "is picking on you" because they called you on it. Guess you're SOL. |

Was he going to school while living with you? If so did the school records show his address as the same as yours? If yes get a copy of the school record showing this . If he was not going to school did he work ? What address does his employer have for him? Get a copy of employment record from his employer.
Contact the IRS and ask them what other thing would constitute proof. |
