space.ghostcc | IRS still hasn't processed my 1040X yet?!? |
I submitted my 1040X on April 5th. Delivery Confirmation said it was delivered on April 8th. I paid the taxes I owed the next day online.
My tax preparer said it's taking so long because they are preparing my return for an audit. But I didn't take any deductions except for the standard one! I thought it took at most 12 weeks to process! |

Don't worry, amended tax returns don't automatically trigger an audit. According to the IRS website, you should allow 8-12 weeks for them to process your amendment. |

Return and Amended tax returns that have balance due, are not processed quickly, IRS works them after the filing season, it does take 12-16 weeks to process amended tax returns.
good luck |

Form 1040X needs to be processed manually. This can take a long time. It is one of the few remaining forms that still cannot be processed electronically. The period from mid-April to the summer is always the slowest time, because that it when regular returns are being processed. This year is especially slow because of the first time homebuyer credit.
Although there is no reason to believe that they are going to audit you, it is important to be aware that not all audits have anything to do with deductions. Even with no deductions, you can be audited for failure to report income that you received. |

Amended taxes take a long time in the vicinity of 10 to 12 weeks. Thes are done manually. There is no reason to doubt if they are being prepared for audit. So, take it easy, you will have it in due time. I prepare taxes, so I know how long does it take. |

I have never heard that as an excuse for why it is taking so long for a return to be processed. Did you call the IRS? They would have mentioned that your account is under review if something didn't add up.
I have heard it is taking the IRS 16 weeks to process amended returns. |

Amended returns are the lowest priority for the IRS. Toward the end of last year, the average amended return was taking 20 weeks to process. |

Since your return was a payment due return it goes to the back of the processing queue. The IRS always processes refund due returns (original or amended) first in order to minimize the payment of interest. They are probably only now starting to process original 2009 payment due returns and that will run through July sometime depending upon the volume. Then they'll start on any payment due amended returns, probably in late July or August.
It's got nothing to do with audits, at least not right now. It's just that your return is way down the processing priority list at the moment. |
