For the 2006 Year, the IRS permits an individual to give gifts of up to $12,000 without being required to pay taxes. In any event, the recipient of the gift is never required to pay taxes on the gift... so, you could recieve millions upon millions from people, and you will not need to pay tax on it. |

In general, no. Any individual can give any other individual up to $12,000 in 2006 and neither will have to even file a gift tax return to report it. |

Not unless the IRS caan demonstrate that the money was given to avoid taxes. Gifts of $11,000 are fully tax exempt. If, however, these gifts were actually given by one or two people who spread the money around to avoid gift taxes they would still have to file a gift tax return. You would not be required to pay tax on any true gift of any amount. Givers lower their estate tax deductions and might increase their taxes upon death from gifts given. |

You can recieve a gift, tax free, as long as it is under I believe $20,000 in value. I can only assume that this means per gift. Seperate gifts can not be grouped together in such a manner. |

If it's truly a gift, you don't have to pay anything. The person giving might have to worry, but not if it's only 11,000 (under 12,000).
But if you did anything to get that 11,000, the government will argue that it's income, and not a true gift. But if it's your 20 aunts, uncles, grandparents and other relatives giving you 11,000 each to go to school or something, you don't have to worry. |

Ask an accountant, but I think gifts over $10K are taxable. The questions is - is it $10K per tax year or $10K per giver ??? I have no idea. When in doubt, seek professional help. |

When a donor makes a gift to the donee (that would be you) the donee does not recognize income for federal income tax purposes. It doesn't make any difference if the gift is property (real estate, stocks, etc). However, if the gift were real estate or stock *and* you sold it there may be a capital gain or loss upon disposition. Check with your accountant or contact the IRS for more information. |
