If I'm filing old (unfiled) tax returns, can I pack multiple years in the same envelope?
I was a bad boy and didn't file in 2005 and 2006 - I'm trying to remedy this situation ASAP b/c I have some financial obligations coming up that require my tax information.

Should I put my 05 and 06 paperwork in the same envelope, or is it far wiser to mail them in separately?

I'm probably doing return receipt and would prefer to avoid spending an extra $5.00 that I don't have to.

Heck, is return receipt really necessary?

Separate envelopes.

The IRS has a tendency to group everything with the top return in the envelope.

I'd do the return receipt, although it probably isn't necessary. If you mail them all i the same envelope there's a real good change they'll all end up attached to each other and you'll spend awhile straightening that out.

I'd send them in separate envelopes, just to make sure someone there at the IRS doesn't accidentally staple the wrong forms together. The headache that would cause is well worth the price of a few extra stamps to prevent.

Each stands alone. Submit them separately.

I personally would put each tax return in its own envelope and then both envelopes in a larger envelope. The return receipt is only telling you that it was delivered at an IRS address. Why don't you just take them to your local IRS office and they will date stamp them and if you take your copies they will also date stamp your copy, good idea to do this in case IRS states they haven't received your returns.

IRS employees have repeatedly suggested to me to have clients put them in seperate envelopes citing the same thing WayneZ posted previously that the persons in charge of opening and sorting various correspondence have a tendency to lump everything with the top item on the stack enclosed. A few bucks more in postage may be WELL worth it.

Steve
You can put everything in the same envelope. Since you are sending the returns late, I would use a return reciept. Depending on the size of the envelope, I would put each tax return in its own envelope and send all three envelopes together in the bigger envelope.

You can use the same envelope as long as you lived in the same basic area for both years. The return receipt is not necessary unless you want to be sure they got the returns, however, you'll find out soon enough. If you owe money and enclose a return, having that clear will prove you mailed it. Save the $5.
