If I Had No Income For 2007, Do I Have To Joint File?
My wife and I are filing, and even though I had no income this past year she thinks I have to file with her. Is she right, or am I a dependent or some other entry on the form? Thanks for any constructive answers; sarcasm and obnoxiousness will be reported.

You do not HAVE TO file a joint return, but in almost all cases the tax on the income your wife earned will be lower if you do.

No, you are not a dependent. You don't have to file a joint return, but it will cost her more in tax if you don't and she has to file as married filing separately, and won't get you any tax advantage. If you file together, then you would file a joint return even if she was the only one with income for the year. So yes she's right, you would be a joint filer, not some other entry on the form.

If your wife has income for 2007 then yes you would file as "Married Filing Jointly". The standard deduction is $10,700. For each personal exemption claim that is $3,400 each. So your wife is correct.

bostonianinmo
You don't HAVE to file a joint return, however in your situation you will be paying much higher tax on the whole if your wife files a separate return. Additionally if you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit or certain other tax credits you will be ineligible for them if you file separate returns.

You can always file a joint return even if only one of you had income and you will generally pay much less tax in that situation.

no, but it will benifit to fille joint, especially if u have children. the deduction for married-joint is higher than married-seperate and if u have children, u cannot receive eic credit if u file seperately

My husband didn't have any income for year 2005 and 2006 and we did joint file base only on my income and there was no problem with it. You can always ask your accountant or whoever does your tax file which would be better for you. Hope this helps.

Short version: You do not have to file jointly but you would be stupid not to.
