If I am a licensed tax preparer in Calfiornia, can I move to Canada and be able to get licensed in Canada?
I have a Ctec license in Calfiornia to do US federal and California tax returns. Can I get licensed in Canada to prepare tax returns for US federal returns? If not, how can I get licensed in a 60 hour online course for Canada? Where would I start to get qualified for Canada without having to do the whole 4 year college program?
Additional Details
Is tax preparation gov't run? I do not mean the taxation ministry but the ones who prepare your tax returns that you send to the gov't.

You do not need a specifc license to prepare a Canadian tax return for a Canadian taxpayer, although many professional tax accountants (CA,CGA & CMA) prepare such returns. There are also many american CPAs here doing US tax returns. You may find jobs from such firms in Toronto or Vancouver, where there are lots of americans living.

Licensed in Canada to do US Federal returns ?
US Federal returns have nothing to do with Canadian Tax preparation licensing, You could be incredibly valuable though for Americans who recently moved here, and even better if you can do Canadian taxes too.

you dont have to be licensed to prepare tax returns but if you wanna do audits or represent someone in court or sign their return i think you have to be a certified accountant (CGA or CA) if you are a CPA in the US that should be able to get equivalent here . I think you should just do people's taxes and charge for that portion and don't bother with the courses.

Read the answers to the same basic question you have posted.

i have never heard of being licensed for tax prep. In fact, when I worked for a bank, many of my fellow auditors used to do this for a sideline and they had no license.

Tax preparation is not government run in Canada. If you want to be able to prepare Canadian tax returns, read the information at the link below. You'll have to ignore any references to electronic filing, as electronic filing is closed for individual returns. But there are contact numbers and such there.

Also, H&R Block operates in Canada. They prepare returns for people in every province, and most of the people who work there are on seasonal employment contracts and are fully trained by H&R block. These people are not required to have any kind of specific educational background. But the company might have to be bonded.

Two major differences between the American and Canadian tax systems:

1) There is no joint filing in Canada
2) In most provinces (except Quebec) Federal and provincial income taxes are calculated on one return.

Good luck

No...it doesn't work like that here....most people do their own taxes its that simple....and like the guy above said the ones that don't go to H&R Block or hire an accountant.

If you want to work for the government GOOD LUCK and get in line behind all the other Canadians with the same idea.
