Stuck_in_Finance | If I am getting married on Dec. 21st 2006, do I file my 2006 as married or single? |
I'd prefer to file single to make things easier. Can I file as single for the whole year even though I got married in the last week and a half of 2006? |

It's your status as of Dec31st. You can always file as Married Filing Separate Return. You can NOT fiile as single.
December 5th has nothing to do with it, and yes, they DO worry about everything. The key date is December 31st.
Same thing applies to kids. It makes a world of difference whether you have a baby on Dec 31st or the next day, Jan1. Have it on December 31 and you can claim it as a dependent for that year, on Jan 1 you have to wait to the next filing year. |

No you can't file as single. Your status for the entire year is determined by your status at the end of December 31.
You can file jointly or as married filing separately, but you'll usually pay more taxes if you file separately. |

honestly you should file married but if your legal marriage certificate isn't dated till after 2006 then you should have no problem filing single.
You are usually better off filing married jointly unless one of you are supporting children or have high medical or employee expenses, or someone else is claiming you as their dependent.
One more thing.. Your wife should use the same last name on her tax return (single or joint with you) as on her soc sec card. She shouldn't use your last name on the tax return until Soc sec admin changes it on her soc sec card. |

Your filing status is determined on December 31st of each year.
Yo may want to run some numbers but I have seen the savings from filing two single returns be enough to pay for the wedding. If this were the case you would need to postpone the wedding until Jan. 1st. |

You MUST file as "Married" if you are married on 12/31/2006. |

You are required to file Married or Married filing single, which is a much higher tax bracket. |

Yes, they really do not worry about it after December 5th |

You will be single for the year 2006. I think the standard is 6 months or more, for anything to be claimed, as far as family goes... look up the sight below for more help! |

Look at things both ways but I believe you will get more money back filing married. A program like TurboTax will let you compare both ways to file. |
