If I did not work in 2007 do I still need to do my taxes?
I was not able to work at all in 2007 due to the health of my baby boy who was born 3 months early and has had many health issues. I had some myself this year as well. I have no income to report besides the social security benifits I get each month for my son. That is about $620.00 a month. Other than that I had no income due to work or anything like that! I have a friend though who keeps telling me I should still file and that I can and should still get a "child earned or unearned credit" (Not Sure Which One It Is?) now that I have my son. I figured that you can only get that if you have been working. She is so certain though that I am still eligable for the Child Earned or Unearned Credit. So I thought I would ask here and see what the responses are like. Just in case she is right. That money could so help out right now. Please share all info you can on this! If you can provied links to that would be great! Thanks in Advance.

So even though I receive the SSI on Behalf of my son ....(who is 4) I still put that down as income? Is Social Security money considered income? I thought that was only considered as income if it was a job and or you received a W-2 from it!? Now I am really confused! Please Help!

Okay, I will clear this up real fast.

No, SSI does not court for Earned Income Credit (EIC).

No, if you had no income then you don't have to file a return.

However, just a FYI Alimony is taxable and child support isn't. But, neither apply for the EIC.

Another hint...when you get a 1099 from the Social Security Administration (SSA) you should see that it is issued using your child's SS #.

I hope this helps!

I believe that you still have to file your taxes, but you won't show any earned income. If you don't file any paperwork for 2007, that's going to send up a red flag.

rlamas_06
if u get a tax form from the income..otherwise maybe u file a " zero " income return.

prcsdime
You do not need to file. I highly doubt that you will be able to file on this income alone and still get the Earned Income Credit. You said his dad paid for mostly everything, why not let the dad(if he's working)claim him and he can get the child tax credit or earned income credit(child tax credit brings an extra thousand dollars and the earned income is based on the person's income) if the child lived with the both of you or lived half the year with the dad.

I ain't no expert, but file your taxes. If you didn't make any money uncle sam is gana wan't to know that isn't he? If not they will be chasing you down thinking you owe them money (and by then you may with late fees) My advice talk with an accountant.

If the SS check is made out to your son, the paperwork will have his SSN on it. Since has no other income, you do not need to file a return for him.

Your friend is confused. It's EARNED income credit, not unearned. It requires a paying job. So does the Additional Child tax credit.

maybe you could claim if you brought in any income... have you babysitted any children and made money.... you have to claim it if you did... what have you done that has brought in money last year

Morpheus New-Age Rainbow Warrior
not really, although there may be other reasons to file, like are you head of household, and is that your son's money... go to the library and they have tax help.... use it!

mckludge2002
Yes I think that you are in fact eligible for that. Because if you make under a certain amount of money that year your eligible. I would figure you made way less then that amount.

But you do also need to report the SS income as income.

Good luck.

Edit: Did they tax the SSI bennies? If not then I don't think you would have too. Sorry for the confusion. I'm finding out more info for you.

Oh and did the checks get made out to you or to your son?

Okay I'm sorry I couldn't find what I was looking for.. but I believe if you made under a certain amount in a year you don't have to report it.

But here's what you need to do. Call H&R block and ask somebody there. They'll be able to answer your question more certainly than anyone here. So far.
--------------------------------------...
Edit: But did it get taxed? It's made out to you then it's your income. Granted that it his money and good job for using it on your son! A lot of people these days wouldn't do that.

Oh derrr *smacking my forehead* are you married? Then if you didn't earn anything and your husband works then dang he can claim you and his son as dependants. That's what I'm doing. My wife is a stay at home mom I work and support the fam I'm claiming them both as dependents. I don't even think my wife has to file. Although it's not a bad idea too because then the gov knows you didn't make anything and they won't grow suspicious. And hey I mean what's the worst that could happen they can't squeeze water out of a rock right?
