If I earned 41,000 last year, and am filing as a single, how much federal tax should I have paid?

Judy1
Around $4700 federal income tax if you took the standard deduction and didn't have any dependents or adjustments.

Depends on how you file and your deductions.

I'm going with standard deduction and personal exemption so taxable is about 32,450, tax on that is $4676.00

ONLY using the single standard deduction - based on an annual income of $41,000.00 you would owe $4,493 on your 2007 return. That is worse case senerio.

41,000 - Your 2007 Standard deduction (5,350) - One Personal exemption (3,400) = $32,250 Taxable Income
Your federal tax liability for 2007 would be $4,493.
