If I earned less than $5 interest on my savings account should I amend my return if I forgot to report it?
My 1099int was online and I didn't think to look for it before I filed. Now I realize that I have less than $5 interest income that I did not include on my return. Should I amend the return, or can I legally not report this income because of the low amount?

Don't worry about it if you have already filed your return (even though you are obligated to report it). The IRS will send you a notice for the additional tax liability you owe on the $5. No need to amend for such a small amount, as the interest and penalties combined (probably less than $1) would be less than the amount of time and effort you put in to amend the return

romettifamily
Legally you don't need to report it. However, to avoid redflagging your returns you might want to amend it just for that reason. Failing to claim something even as minimal as that sets of IRS radar detectors. Then they start watching your returns more carefully and the last thing you want is to have them nitpicking your returns to death. They see your omitting things and they see dishonesty not oversight. They are not a very forgiving group of leeches.

Will it change the amount of tax you owe? If not, don't worry about it.

Look at your taxable income. Now go down the tax table. The brackets are 25.00 unless your taxable income was less than 25.00. The brackets go to 50.00 if your taxable income was 3000. Mathematically, the odds are 20%; 10% if your taxable income is 3000 or more.

Go over your return for more omissions. You may find something else and it will be worth it to amend the return. Use IRS Form 1040X Amended Return. If you don't find any other errors, you do not need to amend your return. May be you will find overlooked deductions.

But if the 5.00 in savings account interest put you in to another bracket, you should amend it to avoid IRS letters, scrutiny and harassment in future years. One thing you should know: a CPA is worthless unless he is an enrolled agent. He must specialize in doing income taxes. Good luck.

No, because it will not affect your taxes. To be completely sure, you can ask a tax professional.

oooooh, shame on you!!!! The IRS is so going to bust you...now if we could only nail the illegals that scam trillions from the Govt. now that would look less shameful. Buy yourself a gallon of gas and be happy that you put it back in their pockets.

no because the government would not tax 5 dollars, and if you live in a state that would they will not audit you over 5 dollars
