If I file an tax return, but my parents still claim me as a dependent, do I get an economoic stimulus check?
I am a college student and I file my own state and federal taxes, but my parents claim me as a dependent on their taxes. Do I still qualify for the $600 economic stimulus check? Thanks.

No, dependents are not eligible for payments under the economic stimulus plan, regardless of how much income you have or what your tax liability is. And if you were age 17 or older as of Dec 31, 2007, your parents won't receive the $300 payment for a dependent child either.

Richard M
If your parents claim you as a dependent, you will be ineligible for the rebate, but you may still benefit under the plan.

While the rebate depends on your 2007 status and income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, taxes would be cut in 2008 from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.

So if you have taxable income in 2008, you will see a tax cut when you file in 2009.

No. One of the qualifications is that you cannot be claimed as a dependent.

Negative.
You should get a lovely letter from the IRS explaining it.

that is a great question. Try the Irs website at IRS.GOV

If you made more than $3000, I think you may get $300, but you will need to file a tax return this year, whether or not you owe taxes.

Scroll down to the part titled "You May Be Eligible Even if You Normally Do Not File a Tax Return"

Jay
If your parents claim you, it would be because they provide more than 50% of your upkeep.

Only one rebate check will be issued per qualified person, and they will get the one issued for you. Maybe you can talk them into giving it to you, but basically, it;s theirs.

It will be for $300. Even if they weren't claiming you, you didn't pay in enough to get $600. $600 is the MAXIMUM for one person.

You might only get $300 if you do not pay enough tax. The fact that your parents claim you as a dependent would have nothing to do with it; it is based on filers who pay tax; no tax paid at all gets you the $300.
