If I find $5 on the floor, do I have to report it as income?

Additional Details
Would YOU report that $5 as income if you found it?

The term for this is "treasure trove." If you find money on the ground, or hidden in a piece of furniture you bought, it is subject to tax. You should enter this on Line 21 of Form 1040 as other income.

Would someone actually report finding $5? Maybe or maybe not, but the IRS rule is that it is to be reported as taxable income.

Yes, you have to.

I would not, neither would most people. Nobody is going to hunt you down about it.

If you start finding $5 every day then you should report it, though.

Haaa, your funny, unless your the tax guy, get a chi latte, that will help you lose it quick enough, drink your free drink with a BIG smile and really enjoy it.

Bob F
Yes. The law says that all income not specifically exempted by a law that makes it exempt is taxable income. Include it on line 21 of Form 1040.

(There is only a one in ten chance that $5 would affect your taxes anyway since the tax tables are in $50 increments!)

travelguruette
Technically. I bet no one does.

wartz
Not unless you are in the business of scouring the floor for lost money.

JAMES T
No, It is treated the same as recreational gambling. The amount is off set by the loss of something of equal values up to a certain amount in incurred during the calender year.
