If I made a tax deductible donation & lost the paperwork...?
Is it still possible to claim it? I didn't since I was unable to locate the form. I could probably pull up a bank record from March of 2007 that showed that I made the donation, but I have since lost the actual reciept that was sent to me. I made a memorial donation to the Special Olympics for $50 in March. Should I redo my taxes to add in the donation?
Additional Details
It's only a $50 donation, so I don't know if it'd really affect my tax forms, plus I don't want to be audited later on & not have the needed materials.

Only really counts for much if you itemize. Go ahead and claim it-you made it.
On second thought-I wouldn't re-work my already-completed tax forms just to add $50 to charitable contributions. Not worth the effort-plus you'll worry forever about getting audited with no receipt.

MoB
A $50 deduction may change your refund by maybe $2.00 - 5.00 dollars. Is it worth your time and effort to amend your tax return over $2 .00- 5.00?
You can use a cancelled check as long as you have a microfich copy of the front and back from the bank. You have every right to get your $2.00.

If you don't itemize, the charitable donation doesn't matter. You have to file Schedule A to take the deduction.

Did you itemize your deductions or use the standard deduction?

For most people they do not have enough deductions to itemize so the standard deduction is greater.

blackbimmer1972
A $50 deduction isn't worth your time and trouble at this point. The bank record wouldn't constitute valid documentation.

Gary H
$50 won't have much of an impact on your taxes. I wouldn't redo my taxes. But if you do, then a cancelled check is adequate documentation to back up the deduction in the unlikely event that you are audited.

heyteach
Unlikely it will make much of a difference so if you're nervous, it's not worth it.

Claim it. The only time it would be called into question is if your are audited by the IRS. That only happens to about 1.5 percent of all taxpayers. Then you can search for the records.
