Moma Mia | If I made repairs to my home in 2007, can I claim them on my taxes? |
|

Unfortunately routine repairs are not tax deductible, but some may qualify for the Energy Credit for 2007. If you installed installation, exterior doors, windows, storm door, etc. they may qualify. If these were just your typical paint and carpet jobs, they do not qualify. See the link for the energy credit. |

Home repairs are not tax deductible unless it is a rental property. |

No Days Off

The only home repairs you can claim are those for rental property and those that are done for medical purposes. |

You can only write off upgrades to your property when you sell it. Basically, if you install something that increases the value of your home. |

This is one of those tax myths. A lot of people believe it is true but it is not. Some people may even get away with doing it but if the IRS caught it in an audit then the taxes would have to be paid and probably with penalties.

No, repairs to your personal residence are not deductible. |

No, but if you plan on selling your home before 2 years, then you can use the reciepts for repairs to offset capital gains taxes. |

Home repairs are not tax deductible except on rental property. If you're living in it, sorry, no deduction.
If you made a major capital improvement (e.g. a new roof or furnace), you still CANNOT deduct it, but you should keep the receipts. When you sell the house, it decreases any taxable gain you might have (by adding to the cost basis).
Fixing a leak doesn't count as a major capital improvement. |
