Ive always thought about that. I don't think it's fair either. Good thing I'm only a waitress in college right now or I'd be throwing a hissy. :D LOL |

Because a flat tax system would crucify the poor and middle class. A typical family of 4 earning $40k would pay $10,000 MORE in tax than they currently do with a 25% flat tax. A single mother of 2 making $18k per year would lose nearly $8,000 in cash flow with a 25% flat tax. What's "fair" about that??
The first rule of taxation is this: Make sure that the taxpayer can afford the tax. A progressive income tax is the ONLY tax that adheres to that rule.
I'll trade paychecks and tax liabilities with you any day, Sparky! |

Don't worry, I doubt you will make 300K a year. |

"Fair" is open to interpretation. If you earned $300,000 in a year, you could well afford to pay more in taxes than someone who earned $30,000. Doesn't that sound fair? |

Arguably, you benefit more from the services provided by government. In particular - police and military protect you from losing your property to thieves/invaders - and you have more property to lose. In general, richer neighborhoods (like the one you would live in on that income) have better roads, better schools, faster response by the fire department and ambulances, and so on. |

I bet you don't work as hard as construction workers but you make more than them. Is that fair? How about you take a pay cut. Would you stop crying then? |

Simple answer: we live in a country where popular vote decides elections, not (really) money. And taxing the rich is a good soundbite to get elected.
But in reality, you are making money in the wrong way to avoid it being taxed (if that is your goal). You need to start a business and defer income to about $50,000 a year (live off 50K and invest the rest) or live of an investment income stream that doesn't generate much taxable income.
Working hard at a W-2 type job you become tax bait. |

Because liberals invented the tax laws we currently use.
During the FDR years, the highest bracket was at times above 90%.
Over the last 60 years, we've been working that top marginal rate down, with Bush and Bush having the lowest to date, at 35%.
(I think Kennedy got in on it by lowering from 81% to 76%, but my numbers might be off a bit.) |

you would be using more of where the taxes go.. (if that makes sense)

I, of course, assume that you mean no disrespect to the people who make less than you. Minimum wage jobs do not pay less because they're easy, but because they rely on the people in too desperate a situation to leave them (you don't find many rich people in a drive-thru at McDonald's).
However, that is not the point. The point is that you have money, and lots of it. The government currently likes you very much. It is their reasoning that since you are by no means struggling with your financial situation that you can afford to pay a little more without your bank buckling over and bursting into flames. What is wrong with a flat tax system you ask? why, the government would be getting less money of course! And three guesses as to who makes the rules.
It was never about 'fair', you see. It is (and always will be) about money. |

Life isn't fair. There are so many people that work really hard and don't make half of what you make but yet have to pay all these taxes and can barely afford to care for themselves or their families. I am a nurse and i work extremly hard and pay taxes a lot of them and just because you make more doesn't mean you work harder than anyone you just fortunately, for you, make more. The tax money has to come from somewhere and who should it come from the people who work hard as hell but can't even afford to feed their families or from people who make a lot more and who constantly complain yet you have no worries. you should take it up with the government people raking in millions a year from everyone's tax money. or you should opt not to get police services who also get paid with tax money. You obviosly are smart because yoy make 300,000 a year but you should know why it doesn't make since for someone who makes 24,000 a year to pay the same taxes as someone who makes 300,000 or 5,000,000. there would be no money for the things that taxes pay for. If i pay 1,500 a year in taxes do you really think a millionaire should only pay 1,500 a year and if so there would be no police no ambulance no loans nothing government paid think about it and then get over it if fair was fair i'd be making millions of dollars a year but i help people instead and get paid close to nothing. I'm not complaining because I love what I do but I hate to hear people complain who obviously don't give a damn about the rest of the world. I'm pretty sure yuo have a nice house where do you think the bank got your loan money from . GOSH THAT WAS SUCH A STUPID QUESTION. FLAT TAX SYSTEM GET REAL |

the thing is that the government puts u on a tax depending on how much u make a year. if u are making 300k a year of course they will tax u like heak. |

Why should someone earning $20,000 a year pay the same as someone earning $300,000 a year?
The $300,000 earner can afford a better house, car and luxuries. The $20,000 earner may have trouble feeding his family after insurance costs for his kids. |

whats wrong with paying a little extra? 300 000 should leave plenty after taxes.bush did cut the top brackets |

As much as I get penalized for this as well, I find that it is necessary for the government to work. Could you imagine that the tax is just a flat rate? This will mean that in order for the tax revenue to remain the same, the base rate needs to rise.
In the end, it will probably not help you much but at the same time be devastating for low income workers.
If you really want to save taxes, you are better off at learning the tax system to see if you are missing any deductions. Below are some common ones. |

A lot of people like to go with the progressive tax system under the belief that you can afford it and you won't be hurt, per se. I personally don't really like it since it discourages some people from doing well. enjoy Obama when he gets into office |
