wonkabar23 | If I make around 2200 dollars a month after taxes, What would be a reasonable amount to spend on rent? |

I would say a reasonable amount would be a week's salary.
So you should look for something for $500 to $600 a month.
If you can find something nice for less than that, that's always good. |

A good rule of thumb would be between 25 and 30 percent. You still have to pay utilities, transportation, insurance, groceries, entertainment, clothes, etc. |

1/3 of you monthly income |

If you have to rent I would not spend more than $600-700. You want to make sure you have enough money for other bills and expenses. If you feel comfortable enough I would suggest buying a house. That way every monthly payment you make goes towards something you own. I have rented for years and if I had been in a house it would have been 1/3 paid for. It's a good investment. |

I have always been told to be safe, it should be one fourth of your salary. Then, one fourth will be for food, entertainment, clothes and gas. Another fourth will be for a car payment and insurance. And, the remaining fourth will be for any credit cards, phone bill, cable, lights or other loans/bills you might have. Plus, if there is any left, it should, of course, go into savings. But, with the way gas prices and food prices keep rising, I would want to find something on the cheaper side....possibly around $500 a month. |

Between 25% and 30% of your net income, or between $550 and $660 in your case.
There's no way that you could afford $1,200 or more as some folks have stated. If you go that high, you'll be in a financial trap that you'll never extricate yourself from!
Your total outlay for housing and debt service (credit cards, car loan, etc.) should be NO MORE than 1/3 of your gross pay. Anything higher than that is just ASKING for trouble. |

You really shouldn't spend more than 1/3 of your income on rent. I would say $800 to $1,000. |

You could afford about 1200..I wouldn't go past that because you have to incorporate other bills..and also you may want to save up or have spending money. I would not rent an apartment OR house for 1200 because you're investing ALOT of money into something you will never own. It just depends on what type of lifestyle u live...It also depends on your location, if I made that much I would get a one bedroom for about 500-600 but no more than that. Then I would have money left for my car insurance, phonebill, utilities, student loans and groceries etc.
Nobody here knows exactly what your lifestyle is...whos to say that you dont already OWN you car and pay nothing BUT insurance. Who says you have credit cards or debts...spending 1200 a month wont necessarily put you in a trap! U have alot left over to pay bills with ....Nobody knows how you spend your money but you. |
