According to the IRS, the clothing must be required by the employer and, most importantly, it must be unable to be worn outside of your employment.

If they are safety shoes, or some other kind of specialty shoes (like nursing shoes) - then you can. If they are just expensive dress shoes, then you can't - because you can wear them for other day-to-day activities.

linda
Only if they are of special, one use design. Basically if they can be purchased for everyday ware they are not tax deductible.

If they are specialty shoes for your work, then probably yes. However it is only deductible on the schedule A, Itemized Deductions, and is subject to 2% of your adjusted gross income. There are other items that you can include with that number i.e. tax prep fees paid this year or a safety deposit box or other unreimbursed employee expenses.

pcreamer2000
If the shoes are either required by the employer or required by the nature of the job.. (doesnt have to be required by employer).... then its deductiable.

This can include socks too.

Joe Private
Everything is tax deductible until you get audited. Remember, the IRS doesn't look at itemized schedules when it does an analysis of you tax return -- it only looks at the bottom line.

If your work shoes are dress shoes, I doubt if you can really claim them unless they have arch supports and you stand a lot. Remember, when you claim something on your taxes, it only helps you a small percentage depending on your tax rate. Why not list the shoes as $400 because you use two pairs per year.

Vanka
Yes they should be. If you are self employed then definetaly. I think they should be if you are not.

Yes
