You probably made more money this year than before, and that's why you owe. If you are a dependent, your income was on a W-2 and you made over $5350 for the year, then you'd owe some tax, and if you didn't have enough withheld to cover what you owe, you'd have to pay it now.
And no, you won't get a refund - you only get that if you have MORE withheld than what you owe.
Check to be sure you have claimed zero allowances on your W-4 form you filled out at work - otherwise this will happen again next year if you make over the limit. |

I agree, your income probably went up and that might have put you into a higher tax bracket. But only owing $192 is almost a perfect tax return to me. That means that you did not give the irs an interest free loan all year and you got to keep more of your own money in your own pocket. The good news is that (a) you pay them when you file your taxes so that you don't accrue interest or (b) when you get your stimulus rebate check, they will deduct what you owe plus interest and you will get the balance. So you will still get a "refund". But look at your withholding on your W-4 and make some adjustments to it if you want to get more of a refund back. But only owing $192 is pretty good. That's money that you got to keep in the bank all year long and maybe drew some interest on it, instead of the irs keeping it because you overpaid your taxes and they didn't give you a dime of interest. You got lucky this year kiddo, because of the stimulus rebate check. |

You'll get your refund minus $192. You think you're bummed, last year I had to give my whole refund plus some for the rest of my student loan. When you have two kids and you are expecting a refund to buy clothes and its taken -- it sucks! I'm talking over $3000 :) Life is still good though! |

A refund is an amount you overpaid. How can you expect a refund if you owe money? |

I'm not sure completely about the IRS... but on my Taxes, I ended up owing money to the Canada Revenue Agency... and yes, this means that you owe them money, they do not owe you money. No return this year. |

No, you won't be getting any money back. In fact, you will have to pay the government $192. That sucks, man. |

Uh, duh, you made money. Being a kid does not exempt you from owing taxes if you make enough.
As a dependent, if all you had were wages, then you made at least $7270 income in order to owe so much. If you made more than $5350 you were supposed to put single-1 on your W-2.
(If you had unearned income like interest and the interest was more than $2000, then you could hit a tax bill that way as well.) |

You will not. Either you get a refund or you have to pay, but you don't do both. |
