esmit172 | If Social Security is your only income will you be eligable for the newly announced tax rebate? |

Just want to clear up one point made in earlier Answers...
Social Security Benefits certainly ARE taxable...but, it depends.
If you collect other income in addition to Social Security, you could owe taxes on at least a portion of your government benefits.
At maximum, 85 percent of your Social Security benefits can be taxed.
To answer your specific question:
Unfortunately....NO...those whose ONLY income is Social Security (hence do NOT make the minimum $3000 taxable income required) are NOT eligible.
That according to this recent article which updates those who are and are NOT eligible:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,325815,00.html
Read down until you get to:
"People who do not make enough to pay taxes but had at least $3,000 in earned income would get $300. Those earning less than that would be disqualified, as would the wealthiest.
People living solely off Social Security checks would NOT get the rebate." |

At this time, it's impossible to tell.
I assume SSI is not taxable, so I do not think you'd be eligible for any sort of tax rebate for those who do pay taxes on their income. |

Very good question, since I am receiving only social security. Read Yahoo's home page article concerning this. In one paragraph it seems as though they will include those whose income is too low to file a return (you and I), but further down, they use the word "wage" when referring to low income. Hard to say. It is not finalized yet. I, however, sent an E-mail to Senator Joseph Biden about this exact instance. If they use tax returns for the mailing of rebate checks, then I will miss out. Senator Biden is the senator from my home state, Delaware. |

NO... not if your sole income is from social security... the floor is an earned income of $3000 and social security doesn't count because it's NOT TAXED. |
