It depends upon your gross income. This also includes income if you are a nominee for an investment account:
IF your filing status is... AND at the end of 2007 you
were...* THEN file a return if
your gross income
was at least...**
single under 65 $8,750
65 or older $10,050
married filing jointly*** under 65 (both spouses) $17,500
65 or older (one spouse) $18,550
65 or older (both spouses) $19,600
married filing separately any age $3,400
head of household under 65 $11,250
65 or older $12,550
qualifying widow(er) with under 65 $14,100
dependent child 65 or older $15,150
* If you were born on January 1, 1943, you are considered to be age 65 at the end of 2007.
** Gross income means all income you received in the form of money, goods, property, and services that is not exempt from tax, including any income from sources outside the United States (even if you may exclude part or all of it). Do not include social security benefits unless you are married filing a separate return and you lived with your spouse at any time during 2007.
*** If you did not live with your spouse at the end of 2007 (or on the date your spouse died) and your gross income was at least $3,400, you must file a return regardless of your age
If you worked and had income tax withheld, whether Federal, State or local, you must file to get the withheld income taxes back. Good luck. |

You can, and depending on your income, you might be required to. You can't take an exemption for yourself though. |

You are required to file your own taxes if you earned income within the year.
On your return you will claim your income and mark that you are claimed as a dependent on somebody else's tax return.
If you earned a significant amount of money or are not enrolled in college for at least half the year then this will reduce your refund that you may get back or may even make you pay back.
Keep in mind that if you are over 18, have a child of your own, or are married you cannot be claimed as a dependent on your parent's tax return unless you meet the criteria of a dependent set forth by the IRS.
If you are over 18 and enrolled at least part-time for half the year in college then you may be claimed as a dependent on your parent's tax return. |

Yes you can.
If you earn sufficient income, you not only can, you must!
If you want to get a refund of overwithheld taxes, you must also file.
The minimum filing requirements are at the front of the Form 1040 instruction booklet each year.
Note that if your parents can claim you as a dependent, you will not be getting the stimulus rebate. |

Even if you are a dependent and you meet the filing requirement, then you must file your own taxes. The filing requirement for dependents is different from nondependents. Also you should file to get refund of taxes withheld (if you are not required to file).
For Single dependents, you must file a return if any of the following apply.
• Your unearned income was more than $850.
• Your earned income was more than $5,350.
• Your gross income was more than the larger of:$850 (for 2008 $900), or Your earned income (up to $5,050) plus $300.
• Your self employed income is $400 or more. |

You have to make below a certain amount of money for your parent to claim you by law.The amount is 3,400. If you make over that amount during the year you worked then no one can claim you LEGALLY. And you would have to file your taxes by using a simple 1040ez return paper (mailing it in) or something like turbo tax! It might help you to look up "Qualifying Relatives" as dependent's under tax laws. You also have to be a full time student if you are over 18 to be claimed. |

If you make money and the govt and/or state takes taxes out, you must file. |

If you have your own job then yes, I did when I was 16 |

There's not much point. You can, but you can't even claim yourself as a dependent. That takes away all of your tax breaks. |
