SILHOUETTE | If a person does not have a social security number and wishes to pay taxes to the state what are the options? |
If a person does not have a social security number and wishes to pay taxes to the state what are the options? I know that Federal Tax ID is used only for businesses, how about personal number for pursonal use?? Is there such an option? |
|

Hey there
|
To the best of my knowledge, you would have to apply for a social security card. Personal numbers (unlike businesses) are not available as an option. |

What a bunch of rubbish for answers so far.
If you don't have a SSN then you need to apply for a TIN (taxpayers identification number) this is meant for non-citizens that are allowed to work in the US. However, it also works for those without a green card too. It is better to only break one law than several.
This answer isn't based on guess work or bias...I have been a tax professional for almost 20 years.
I assure you this is the correct answer. |

If you are not eligible for a social security number but need to pay taxes, apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Fill out form W-7 ( http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf ), and send the form and the required documentation to the IRS address on page 3.
But, if you are eligible for a social security number, then apply for one. Fill out form SS-5 ( http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf ), and bring it and the required documentation to your local Social Security Administration office. |

Take a look here at the different types of reporting numbers that you can apply for in order to file federal income tax forms.
If you don't have a social security number, there certainly are other options and they are discussed on the Internal Revenue Service web site below. |

there is no option. you must get a SS#. |

Well a personal Federal Tax ID number is the Social Security Number. If you are going to to pay taxes then you should get the SS#, at least get a little credit for your taxes paid that way. It may not be around but why not |

Go in person to your nearest office of Social Security and apply for a number.
Go early in the morning. They open at nine o'clock,so get there early to avoid the long lines. You will get a receipt and in two weeks in the mail. Also, check with IRS Taxpayer Assistance Division and they can not only help you but fill out the forms AND file your taxes for free. In both cases, bring some ID. |

Get an SSN or you are working illegally in the USA. |

Yes, there is however you should have a valid social security number if you are going to be paying taxes legitimately in the USA. All citizens receive a social security number at the time of their birth when their birth certificates go on record. If you require assistance with another type of identification and/or you need a new SS ID #, then a good place to start would be our agency. Please register as a member at the following link and once you register, one of our counselors will get back to you with the appropriate information on obtaining a new SS ID # that you can use for personal use. But keep in mind, however; that you will have to be a legitimate resident of the USA in order to work here and obtain a valid social security number, but there are alot more options out there other than the Federal Tax ID #'s. This is definately not the route to take if you are going to be using the number personally.
Please go to our online club and register and the information you need to receive the SS ID # for personal use willl be sent to you immediately by email. Rates and prices vary depending on the State of issuance at the time of your order but all the information you need will be provided to you once you register with us.
