This happened when my mother-in-law passed away and we were trying to sell the house. We didn't have to pay for 6 months, and then had to pay a reduced rate until the sale was completed. |

Empty houses are exempt from Council Tax for six months. After six months, you get a discount of 50%.
If the property is uninhabitable (that is, can't be lived in because of the condition it is in) or needs structural alterations, the exemption may last for up to 12 months. |

You can get council tax exemption in some circumstances. Call your council and see if it applies to your situation. |

some clairification on the above answers
An unoocupied and unfurnished property is entitled to a maximum exemption of 6 months (Class C ) after which point it reverts to a zero occupany charge.
Unlike the Class C Exemption, councils have now been delegated the powers to set the zero occupancy discount on a local basis and although prior to the councils being given these powers the zero occupancy rate was nationally set at 50%, many councils have reduced this discount .
You need to check with your local council to see what zero occupancy rate they offer. |

If it's empty you'll get six months exemption. Then you'll pay the full amount (no reductions allowed). |

Basically no - usually for a 6 month period of vacancy. Even after that there is a discount for single people and an empty house outside the exemption counts as a single person. Your local council has leaflets on this and should be very helpful - ours was to us. |

You only pay council tax if someone is living in the house. Even if you own the house..you don't have to pay if the property is empty. |
