If a property is empty with no furniture will the owner have to pay council tax?

Yes. Even if it is not occupied.

This happened when my mother-in-law passed away and we were trying to sell the house. We didn't have to pay for 6 months, and then had to pay a reduced rate until the sale was completed.

Empty houses are exempt from Council Tax for six months. After six months, you get a discount of 50%.

If the property is uninhabitable (that is, can't be lived in because of the condition it is in) or needs structural alterations, the exemption may last for up to 12 months.

if it is private property then you dont but if it is buisness then the roof has to be removed hope this helps

You can get council tax exemption in some circumstances. Call your council and see if it applies to your situation.

some clairification on the above answers

An unoocupied and unfurnished property is entitled to a maximum exemption of 6 months (Class C ) after which point it reverts to a zero occupany charge.

Unlike the Class C Exemption, councils have now been delegated the powers to set the zero occupancy discount on a local basis and although prior to the councils being given these powers the zero occupancy rate was nationally set at 50%, many councils have reduced this discount .

You need to check with your local council to see what zero occupancy rate they offer.

If it's empty you'll get six months exemption. Then you'll pay the full amount (no reductions allowed).

Basically no - usually for a 6 month period of vacancy. Even after that there is a discount for single people and an empty house outside the exemption counts as a single person. Your local council has leaflets on this and should be very helpful - ours was to us.

Ollie
Yes unless you go to the council & tell them its unlived in.You might get a reduction of council tax.Good Luck

spook542
You have to pay half but only after 6 months.

joe m
Yes unless its a second home and then you only have to pay hald the tax. But you should know that yourself.

You only pay council tax if someone is living in the house. Even if you own the house..you don't have to pay if the property is empty.

berty
not in north wales if house as no furniture or any body liveing there no council tax

Aaron K
yes it doen't matter if there is no furniture or not. Taxes are based on the land and the improvements on the land like houses.
