It's not just the tax, as you correctly say, but also the industry itself, which directly employs several thousands, and which uses the services of other businesses. The total job losses would be enormous.
Lose the tax revenue, and, yes, it would ensure that prices had to rise in other areas to make up for the loss of revenue.
I think the permanent loss of the thousands of associated jobs is a more important, and intractable problem.
The country would be (properly) up in arms if we were to let (for example) the aircraft industry shut down.
I wonder if all those non-smokers have thought beyond their own distaste to the distaste that might be experienced by thousands of newly unemployed people and their families, and the horrendous long-term costs involved in all of that? |

The UK government gets around £9 billion each year from tax levied on all tobacco products, compared to the £1:5 billion it costs the NHS to treat all smoking related disorders is quite small compared to the £3 billion it pays out to treat all eating disorders,,yeah I would soon leave ,,,,, |

I'll be honest with you and say that I can't stand smoking - to me the smell is flippin' awful....
BUT...... we live in a free country and it's about time this government stopped dictating to everyone. The problem is no one in this country ever does anything about our corrupt and incompetent "leaders."
More power to you - but I wouldn't blame anyone who wanted to leave this country. I wish I could afford to and I'd be gone. |

P.S.

My recollection of history has the kings of Europe initially banned the "noxious, smelly weed" when it was introduced from the Americas in the 16th and 17 century. It was soon discovered that the tax revenues would more than make up for the "noxious" smell, and it was no longer banned, and in fact very profitable for the government. |

So what if you go and the amount of revenue the government gets goes down? Do you know how much would be saved from not having to treat people with smoking related diseases and problems?
Any way I'm not bothered whether you chose to poison your own body or not, just don't blow it in my face. |

I don't smoke anymore, but I know what you mean; it isn't just smoking either, that is just this weeks diversion from what we should all be doing and thinking.
Next it will be eating, then driving (who am I kidding it is already eating and driving) then anything else they can think of to dictate to us about.
And why......Cause we all put up with it don't we, we might believe that we will all vote with our feet, but life here is already quite very bad and yet we still haven't walked have we.
Greed runs this country, we none of us ever give a toss as long as we can all have what they tell us we need and live the way they tell us to live! |

is a ciggie so important? it will kill you. but if it is, and if you leave this country may i wish you the best of luck in all that you do. i have to say though, that tax from your ciggies dont run this country. your taxes are needed to finance your healthcare . if every smoker in this god forsaken country stopped smoking, it will be good. |
