If federal tax witheld was 3,740 shouldnt I get that amount back, Turbo tax is saying im only getting 2,740?

It depends on how much your wages were, are you married, any children? These things all factor in to how much you get back. You don't always necessarily get it all back.

railroad dave
no , some actually has to go to the govt as tax .

You don't get back everything that's been withheld! You usually have to pay *some* taxes on your income -- that's the purpose of withholding in the first place. That money is sent to the government to pay the taxes that you owe. If your employer has withheld more than the actual amount of taxes that you owe, you get back the difference. That's why it's called a "refund" -- because they are just refunding the extra money back to you.

If $3740 was withheld and you are getting back $2740, that means you only had to pay $1000 in taxes this year. That's really not very much at all. Consider yourself lucky.

Your refund is the difference between what SHOULD have been withheld and what WAS withheld. Assuming you followed the instructions, 1000 is what SHOULD have been withheld and the total is correct.

Not nessacary it all depnds on the amount of money you made, your exemptions, your taxable income. It can get very complicated If you think the program is wrong the go to irs.gov they have a 1800 number where you can ask questions and a lot of literature you can read.

ONLY if you owe no tax. Your withholding is to pay any tax you owe. Any refund is excess withholding over what you owe in taxes. That's a pretty good refund!

Tax withheld minus amount in tax table (look up your income, after deductions) is what you get back, if it's more than that. If it's less, then you owe.

It depends on how many dependants you have and any other deductions.

Not necessarily, you are required to pay a certain amount in unless you make a very low amount for the entire year.

There are some people that are exempt from taxes. For example when I was younger and worked in a restraunt, I only made 1000 the whole year. In that case, I didn't owe any tax.

It is doubtful this is the case with you since you paid in so much during the year. More than likely the difference is your tax liability for the year.

Generally people who make less than the respective amounts in the "source" section below would be owed the entire amount of the money back if they paid in taxes during the year. That is why people who make less than the amounts listed below are not required to file. In other words, they didn't make enough to have any tax liability.
