mark7 | If giving rebate checks helps the economy, why dont they lower taxes altogether? |
if they lower taxes by lets say 1/2, wouldnt that be helpful for the economy since your keeping your own money and spending it? Additional Details if giving checks is helpful why dont they do that always?...."i still believe the checks r a loan" |

Bost made a good point cutting taxes by 1/2 will destroy the government and the economy... However lowering the middle class and the working classes taxes will promote more spending. To regain the lost tax money just simply tax the wealthy more. The poor is getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. The middle class is now slowing becoming the working class. Yet the billionaires get richer and richer...
Lets take a look back at the years before the Great Depression... Our economy was the same as it is today, small % of people held the majority of the money. There is no reason anyone making over 1 million a year should be taxed at 90% of their earnings over 1 million.... So why doesn't the government do that? Lets thank all the lobbyists. |

That is what the Bush tax cuts were intended to do. Those are the cuts that Congress now seems to want to end. |

Then they would have to raise taxes later, which nobody wants to hear. The rebate check is a quick fix (bandaid). |

Tax cuts can only work if the government cuts spending also.
While Bush and the Republicans did cut taxes, they increased spending more than any other administration.
The Democrats will have some tough choices next year:
1) Increase Taxes; and/or,
2) Cut Spending.
Contrary to popular right wing belief, tax cuts do not increase revenues for the government more than they cost in lost revenues. |

It's a balance - there's a theory that if people have extra money to spend, it'll keep the country out of a recession - the downside is that it most likely increases inflation which also damages the economy.
Giving the rebates, and the associated 2008 tax cut that the rebate is an advance on, increases the national debt so has a harmful side to the economy. |

We're already deep in the deficit crapper due to lower taxes during wartime, an incredibly irresponsible tactic by a clueless administration. Taxes will need to RAISED significantly to pay off the current debt. Cutting taxes by half would collapse the Federal government AND the economy, IMHO. |

The rebate is temporary to give the economy a one time boost and help avoid or at least lesses a recession. Cutting taxes would be permanent and cost too much. We already have a huge deficit that needs to be paid off. |

Yes that would help the economy. Unfortunately they also have to think about funding all the programs they provide which means collecting as much tax as possible. 1/2 as much tax means 1/2 as much money for all of the government activities. Given the current debt I don't think that's really an option. |
