0 if you are infact talking about dependents because you are not a dependent...you are claiming yourself!! Now you claiming yourself you would list 1 as an exemption!! |

There are two different types of filing you are talking about. On your W4, which you fill out at work for tax deduction purposes, you can claim anything you want. The lower the number, the more taxes they deduct but the more you'll get back in the long run. Please bare in mind people who tell you to claim zero without justification is wrong. While claiming zero takes out the most up front, it gives you maximum back once you file taxes for the year. However this is horrible. There is a misconception that getting money back from the IRS is a good thing.
The truth is, anytime you get money back from the IRS, this means you loaned them an interest free loan for the entire year and now they're paying you back. This means that you could have gotten the money up front and invested in anything with interest bearing and would still have benefitted more from it than having paid it to the IRS to "hold" onto this money for you. The best scenario is to not having any refunds or owe.
The second filing this can apply to is tax filing. Claiming zero on your taxes indicates that you can be claimed as a dependent. This is a sad mistake. You should never claim zero here unless you are being claimed as a dependent. For example in regards to the Economic Stimulus check. If you claim zero here even though no one else claimed you as a dependent, you automatically disqualify yourself for the Stimulus payment (at least till 2008) for making this mistake. You would at least claim a 1 here for yourself.
If in doubt, claim 1 on both. |

I find it hard to believe that someone is really asking a question like this. If you are single and have no dependents, why in the h*** do you think you would put anything but a big, fat ZERO 0 for dependents on your tax information?!?
Exemptions are totally different. You are your own exemption. If you are asking about your W4 at work, then you claim 1 if you want less tax withheld from your paychecks. You come up with the difference at year's end. |

Claim yourself as "1" if you want a bigger paycheck, Claim yourself as "0" if you want a bigger return and lower risk of owing taxes at year's end. You have no dependents. |

0 duh. and u should always claim 0 bc then u get more money! and usually u dont have to pay anything back at the end of the year. |

If you mean exemptions on your W-4 form then you put 1 if you claim yourself (your parents no longer claim you as a dependent). You can put 2 if you have a higher than average mortgage payment or other unusual tax deductions. The higher the number the less federal tax is withheld, if your number is too high you will owe federal tax come tax time next year. |
