If i bought an item on ebay from an international seller. Would I get taxed when it is posted to me in the UK?
More specifically i was looking to buy a sports racket. The listed price from power sellers in Hong kong looks cheap. Would I get taxed by the customs here in UK when the package arrives. And if so, how and where do I have to pay the tax?

It depends what the seller declares its value as on the customs label. Generally you are allowed the equivilent value of UK£17 tax-free before HMCE start taking an interest in any goods imported into the country. If it is marked as a "gift", then the figure is a little higher - about UK£35. If the value is declared as above this figure then you run the risk of attracting customs duty and/or VAT. Usually, your postie will knock on the door and demand the cash when they deliver it, though it isn't unknown for them to "forget" and just post it through your door anyway without collecting the money - you might get lucky, you might not - it's a bit like a lottery. If you haven't got the cash, it'll go back to your local sorting office and you'll have to go and pick it up yourself at a later date. There is usually always a post office handling fee to pay as well in addition to the actual import duty and VAT.

If the value of the item is over £18 (p&p not included) then you may get charged also you have to pay an extra handling fee to the post office if you are charged by customs.
You would pay the charge when you pick up the item from the local sorting office.
Even marking as a gift may not save you from customs as they can still charge you if the gift is quite a high value.

there is a certain amount which is nonchargeable, but it is best to confirm with HM Revenues and Customs, as I once bought 2 T-shirts from the States and they charged me £7 duty tax.
Also make sure the shipper marks the package as a 'gift' then should declare the value, but must be under certain amount again.

door.uk
Only if your very very unlucky

footnote, customs have every right to open any package and if it marked gift and they have doubts they have the option of charging tax. unlikely about 1 in 2000+

otherwise my uncle Wong whould be sending me container loads off stuff with gift marked on the side

i purchase stuff quite often on ebay from abroad, and the tax SHOULD already be included in your shipping costs, but check out with the seller if you are unsure. I have never been charged direct from Customs here in the uk.

Not if the seller listed the item as a "Gift" on the customs form ;-)
