If i file for independent at 17 years old is that a good idea?
Me and my mama are having problems and i want to move out should i file independent and just live with my aunt i want to know if this is a good or bad idea??
so read the rules for dependents and see if you mother can claim you or if you can claim yourself.
if you live with your aunt, it may turn out that next year you still can't claim yourself...your aunt will.

You don't get a choice in the matter. She can still claim you as a dependent if you lived in her home for more than half of the year and didn't provide more than half of your OWN support. If you lived in your aunt's home your aunt can probably claim you if your mother cannot.

If you are under age 19, a student and resided with your mother in 2008 then she can claim you and if you file a tax return you have to mark the box releasing your dependency. You can still make 5,450 and own no federal income tax.

For 2008, if your mama can claim you, then you can not your own exemption. It is not your choice.
If you move out now, for 2009 you may be independent.
A dependent can be your qualifying child or qualifying relative. Read about the requirements to claim a dependent: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/03/requirements-for-claiming-dependent.html
