If i give to salvation army and put a value on it, can i deduct that amount off my taxes?

You can, but I believe you have to itemize your deductions to take advantage of this write-off.

Only if you use a Schedule A (itemized deductions).

Judy1
As long as the value is a reasonable number, a donation to the SA is tax deductible. You will need to get a receipt from them for the item or items. The value is the current fair market value, which probably is nowhere close to what you paid for the item, it's what they can sell it for. The SA website gives values for a large number of items typically donated to them that you can use when valuing the donation.

Note that there are special IRS rules for donation of a car.

You don't deduct the amount off your taxes. If you itemize, you show it as a charitable deduction, and the amount of the donation is deducted from your income before taxes are calculated. If you don't itemize, you get no tax benefit from the donation and don't show it on your tax return.

yes but you better keep the reciet to prove how much they feel you have given them

My long answer disappeared when I tried to go to "preview"

So I'll give you the short one which is probably better--

Particularly with donations---I would refer to the IRS
publications which can be downloaded as I recall !

Go to " IRS.GOV " on the Internet --
