If at the end of your filing you owe money to the goverment they will use that as a match to your contribution....

if you owe 400 dollars to the goverment they will deduct
300 out of that.

They will deduct $300 from your taxable income. Therefore the amount of income they use to calculate how much tax you should pay is less. For example. If you make $30,000 in a year and make $3,000 in donations, you only pay taxes on $27,000.

Donations are deductible if you itemize. (Sch A tax form). If you do not have enough to itemize, then you would not get to deduct any portion of the donation.
Additionally, you do not necessarily get all $300 back. Deductions offset the liability, but you do not get it dollar for dollar and there are caps on donations as well.

A donation is not so much a refund of taxes as it is a deduction to the amount of your gross income. You will get back a percentage as it relates to that gross income. The average person is in the tax bracket of about 21%. So, depending on several factors including how much you made, how much you paid, and your other deductiond you should get a reduction of your tax burden of about $63 (21% of the $300). Remember it may not end up as An additional $63 bucks because there are a lot of factors to consider that haven't been provided here.

I can almost guarantee you'll get more for the standard deductions than you will for itemizing.

Otherwise, TurboTax will walk you through it for free and let you know for sure. It's totally free online.

If you don't itemize deductions on Schedule A then you get no deduction for the donation. If you are single you would need to exceed the $5350 standard deduction they already give you. Common itemized deductions are mortgage interest, real estate taxes, personal property taxes, state income taxes or sales tax, donations, medical expenses, unreimbursed job expenses.

No, you won't get back everything you donated, otherwise it would basically be the government making people's donations for them. The amount goes into a formula, and it really doesn't make a difference unless you've donated a lot more than that in the year. And once you reach the certain point, a certain percentage of it comes back. (A small percentage.)

i belive that the donation just makes u pay less on ur taxes
