According to the IRS:
You may qualify for a minimum payment of $300 ($600 if filing a joint return) if your tax return reflects $3,000 or more in qualifying income - which includes Social Security.
BUT YOU MUST FILE TO RECEIVE THE REBATE, even if you are not required to do so.
See the sample Form 1040A at the link below. |

If you don't file a 2007 tax return you won't get one. |

I work with an older woman who had this issue, she doesn't file taxes because she doesn't work, just gets SS and disability but she still had to go to her local library and get a form and fill it out to be eligible for this new rebate, so I'm sure you'll have to do the same. |

You must file a tax return in 2008 to get the rebate check. If you do not want to do the return yourself, some preparation firms are having a special price to do this for you, call and ask. |

No, not if you don't do a tax form. If you file a 2007 return and show the social security you recieve, you'll be eligible for the $300 as long as your ss is at least $3000 for the year.
And don't pay someone to prepare it - if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, see https://locator.aarp.org/vmis/sites/tax_aide_locator.jsp to find a TCE site near you - they'll do your return at no charge. You don't have to be an AARP member to use this service. |

No, you must file a 2007 Federal Tax Return using Form 1040A. You must enter your SS income in the appropriate space and write across the top of the form: "STIMULUS PAYMENT" and file the form with the IRS center servicing your area.
Your social security, tier 1 railroad retirement, and veterans disability and death benefits are entered on line 14a for the Form 1040A. |

Yuppers. The tax filing is the only thing that's stopping you. |

Even if a person doens't normally file because their only source of income is social security or disability, then the government is strongly urging these people to file in order to receive the rebate check. The minumum is 300.00, and at most 600.00 if single. Married filing joint is minimum 600.00, and at most 1200.00. The government will start issuing these rebate checks starting May. You can fill out the simple 1040-EZ form. |
