I made a loan to my mother, she paid it back with interest - how do I report the interest she paid to the IRS?
The interest was under $10,000 - I don't want it to be a gift, I want it to be considered interest. Do I need to file a 1099? Does she? If yes, which "flavor" (maybe 1099-INT)?

You claim all income. It doesn't matter how much each individual amount is, what matters is the total it all comes to when added together.

Luftwaffles
Yes. All income must be reported.

spicertax
Yes to get your refund of Federal income tax withheld if any. Otherwise no need to file if that is your only income.

dloe
You are required to declare any income you earn during the year.

A company is required to give you a 1099 if they have paid you more than $600 during the year.

Yes. The IRS requires that if you meet the filing requirements for the tax year that you report ALL income, from whatever sources.

Judy1
If that was your only job for the year, and social security and medicare were withheld, then no you don't have to file. But otherwise yes you have to include it.

You must report ALL income from ALL sources for the entire year - on ONE tax return.

Gem
Yes.

All income is added together to come to the minimum requirements to file. You cannot withhold any income because that alone is less than the total limit.

The government gets a piece of everything.

And once the bills come due for this past year, and the one coming up, it is only going to get worse.

I'm thinking we will be paying between 70-80% of our incomes for social security, federal, state & health care taxes within 5 years.

We are in deep trouble.
