I'm going for my CPA and I just went for my undergrad in Accounting. I believe the official degree is called Bachelor of Science in Accounting. However, to go for your CPA you usually need a minimum of 150 credit hours. My bachelor's is only about 120. So most people will go to school for their masters either in accounting, business finance, or some other field (something with computers is a good idea). You need certain accounting classes to go for the CPA so you should check out the requirements in your state. Almost all of the important classes are usually part of the degree programs. These are usually cost accounting, taxation, advanced accounting (my most difficult), and audit.
Study hard in all of these classes. Also, they usually give sample CPA style questions in the textbooks that the teacher may or may not go over with you. I suggest doing these (their usually hard) because it will help you prepare for the test. You can take the test and pass, but you still need a certain amount of time in the field to actually get your CPA. I know to be a CPA in Ohio, Florida, and Indiana you need at least a yr experience in an audit, tax, or accounting field (fields like A/R, A/P, Inventory don't apply). However, if you've passed the exam and don't have the yr experience, you will receive a CPA-I. This means that you have the knowledge (passed the test) but not yet the experience, and employers will look very favorably upon this.
If you are serious about a career in accounting than I would look into a degree in a computer field as well (networking or software related). If you have a double major in this you are worth GOLD to a company, because you're a combined accountant and IT person. It's more work and studying but has huge benefits in the long run.
The test has 4 parts (all computerized now). You can take any part in any order, but you need to complete them all within 18 months of your starting date.
Good Luck and study hard, the test is gruelling !! |
