If I was married for 6 months of the year, how do I file my taxes in the US? As a final year of jointly married? Married separately? Single?

You file under your marital status as of the last day of the year. In your case, that will be single unless you are entitled to Head of Household because your child is living with you and you meet the other tests.

Your filing status is what you are on December 31. It doesn't matter if you were married from January 1 through December 30, you would still file single if you were single on that last day of the year.

Your filing status is based on your marital status on 12/31/08. Therefore, you will file as single unless you meet the qualifications to file as head of household. See Irs Publication 501 at www.irs.gov.

Judge Judy is Back!
What ever your marital status is on the last day of the year is what you use so in your case, you're divorced (or single).

you are single. the only day that matters is Dec 31. if on that day you are married, then file MFS or MFJ. However, if you are fully divorced on that day, then file Single.

Single.

Your status is determined as of 12/31, so if you got divorced during the year, you are single for tax filing, or head of household if you meet all of the qualifications.

You are single. If you have kids you can file head of household.

Don
If you get married in Dec. You file jointly just as if you have been married all year. If you get a divorce you will file as a single. Good Luck.

emc_akira
I believe you file your status at the end of the year. So if you are single at the end of the year, then you would file single.
